2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid GR-S Review: Handsomely Familiar

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S adds a dose of sportiness to an otherwise safe hybrid choice, but it does come at a steep price.

When the Toyota Corolla Cross debuted in the Philippine market all the way back in 2020, it showed consumers a new and different side to the already popular Corolla nameplate; this time, as a contender in the crossover SUV segment built on the same Toyota Global New Architecture platform as the Corolla Altis sedan. Though we’ve already reviewed the pre-facelift Corolla Cross GR-S, along with the facelifted base G variant, we’re once again back in another Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S to see exactly how much it has evolved and what made it a hot seller in the local market.

Exterior Styling

From then and now, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S and its neighboring trims have always possessed a clean, distinguished look that’s less “Corolla” and more towards “RAV4”, thanks to its taller SUV posture and relatively similar wide front grille area.

Large and wide-opening front and rear doors sit on the sides of the vehicle, with the handles placed at a comfortable height for easy access both inside and outside, and the rear holds a nicely sized, upward-opening power tailgate that makes it easy to load even more cumbersome items.

Our test car also came with a particularly well-blended “Emotional Red” paint scheme that adds an elegant touch to the overall nicely shaped body of the Corolla Cross, thanks to a contrast of a deep red with black and silver accents. 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels serve as the cherry-on-top for the Corolla Cross, completing a finish that is certainly up there in terms of looks, particularly for the compact crossover SUV range.

Overall, the Corolla Cross GR-S brings consumers a nice and stylish, but neat-looking exterior package that doesn’t stray away from being safe, which is fitting of the Corolla name in general.

Interior Styling, Space, and Creature Comforts

The inside of the current Corolla Cross tells a slightly different story; on one hand, the shape and order of the interior is the usual Corolla styling affair, shaped after the current generation sedan. However, we can’t help but point out its oddly plasticky and bare nature, especially considering the price point of the GR-S trim level. And while it may not be the worst interior to be in per se, it may be fair to expect a bit more from buying this top-shelf Corolla SUV.

The mostly black interior is composed of mostly plastic surfaces with only a few soft touch points, and the gear selector is notchy and equally as plasticky in terms of feel, although it is easy to use. The gauge cluster on the GR-S is a clear, full digital unit with easy to understand readouts for the speedometer, fuel, and coolant temps, as well as readouts for range and an efficiency meter on the left side of the cluster in lieu of a tachometer, which helps remind you which part of the car’s efficiency range you’re using up, depending on your throttle position.

The Corolla Cross GR-S comes with a 10-inch infotainment display, which is decently clear and easy to use, and is set at a height that makes it easy to reach and view. It does feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Audio is expressed through a 6-speaker system with an “okay” output quality, even when adjusted through the equalizer menu built into the infotainment system.

Putting aside the plasticky finish, as well as the average speaker sound quality, the interior of the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S is nicely shaped, rattle-free, and roomy for both front and rear seat occupants; the leather seats in both sides are large and supportive, with electronic adjustments for the driver’s seat only, as the front and rear passenger seats are fitted with manual adjustments. The tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel also helps make finding a comfortable position for driving easily achievable for drivers alike. The GR-S trim also comes with a panoramic moon roof that helps bring a bit more life to the muted, dark-toned plastic interior.

Opening the tailgate of the Corolla Cross GR-S greets you with 440L of usable cargo volume, which can be further complemented thanks to the available 60:40 split-folding rear seats; a function that can come in handy during longer trips, and for longer items alike.

Powertrain & Performance

The Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S boots the same standard hybrid powertrain available across all trim levels, namely a 1.8-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder that produces 98 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, which is combined with a single electric motor, bringing a total power output of 122 PS with a maximum torque output of 142 Nm at 3,600 rpm put down through a CVT.

While the on-paper figures don’t seem like all that much, the Cross does work its hybrid powertrain magic at the lower end with brisk, smooth acceleration and healthy amounts of low-end torque, which makes it perfect for swift, city driving.

The hybrid electric powertrain also boasts smooth transitions between using the gasoline engine and the electric motor, blending the two power sources seamlessly as you drive with no noticeable lurch. However, most typical of other current-gen Toyota hybrids, the gasoline engine does get rather buzzy both during idle, when the gasoline engine comes alive, as well as power-on transitions during more aggressive acceleration when passing traffic, for instance.

Handling Performance & Tires, Suspension, and Braking

The Corolla Cross GR-S gets the same basic suspension layout as its neighboring trims, being MacPherson struts up front, and a torsion beam at the rear. In this case, however, the GR-S is described to have a slightly stiffer, tuned suspension package unique to its own trim, which gives it firmer road handling.

And while it is far from being uncomfortably firm, the suspension does seem to help during harsher cornering, as the car does express the same, tossable character one comes to expect from a Corolla, despite its larger stature. The Cross GR-S also comes with 225/50 tires to wrap its 18-inch alloy wheels, giving it a decent amount of grip for its purpose, and not much more.

The ventilated front and solid rear brake disk setup of the Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S helps it come to a stop with relative ease and a good amount of stability, and as a bonus, with a brake pedal that isn’t disturbingly touchy. You can, however, also rely on the adjustable off-throttle regenerative braking during traffic situations wherein smoother braking is needed, saving the physical brakes from a bit of work, and thereby lessening the worry for an early brake-pad replacement.

Everyday Driving Comfort and Fuel Consumption

To say that the Corolla nameplate has been synonymous with everyday driving throughout its history is an understatement, and in this particular sense, the Corolla Cross GR-S is as “Corolla” as can be; that means efficient, comfortable, and easy driving with a decently quiet cabin environment.

The low-effort electronic steering system helps not just in nimble handling, but also in preventing fatigue and helping in more tricky parking situations, and the controls for both the infotainment and climate systems are easy to reach and simple enough to use, without any sort of fuss or confusion.

The seats are supportive, but comfortable thanks to their well-bolstered, but unintrusive design, and the rear bench seats are equally nice to sit on, all of which help make even longer drives not as exhausting.

Despite the GR-S being on its own unique “sport” tuned suspension, this trim of Corolla Cross rides nicely even over harsher bumps both in lower and higher speeds. And even with a slight noise from the tires and from some wind during highway cruising, the Corolla Cross GR-S is by no means tiresome and is certainly a very livable car.

In terms of efficiency, while Toyota does not give out any clear figure for the local Corolla Cross units, some reports a consumption of 15 kilometers per liter, all the way to 24 kilometers per liter. Our test car managed an excellent 21.6 kilometers per liter in mixed driving conditions, at least based on the onboard computer; again, very much a welcomed Corolla attribute reflected by even its crossover SUV entry.

Safety

The current-gen 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S comes with all the bells and whistles for its safety items, which includes the standard anti-lock braking system with stability controls, as well as an extra layer of safety thanks to the inclusion of Toyota Safety Sense, a blind spot monitoring system, and a rear-cross traffic alert system which helps warn you of passing cars you may not see when backing out of a parking space. Lane Tracing Assist and Lane Departure Alert systems are also included.

For impact safety, SRS front and side airbags are in place for the driver and front passenger, while knee airbags and rear side and curtain airbags help further protect occupants at both ends of the car in case of a collision. But to prevent those measures from being used to begin with, Toyota wisely put their Pre-Collision System in the Corolla Cross GR-S’s net of safety systems in order to warn the driver of an imminent crash, and it can even go so far as to automatically apply braking if the driver fails to do so despite the warnings, which may help avoid any trouble especially in sudden-stop situations.

Conclusion

2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid GR-S Review: Handsomely Familiar

From its success in various segments in the past, such as the sedan, coupe, and even wagon classes, the Corolla nameplate once more proves its worth in the highly-popular crossover SUV segment with the Corolla Cross. The GR-S trim also adds a bit more fun and styling to the otherwise simple Corolla SUV. Although this top-trim model has its own neat features, it can certainly be said that there is room for improvement, especially considering its relatively bare and plasticky interior finish and mild powertrain in contrast to its MSRP of P1,943,000, which puts it in a price range with bigger and sometimes, more premium competition.

Still, despite its shortcomings, the current Corolla Cross shows Toyota’s talent for providing simple, reliable, and economical transportation, one that’s always been associated with the Corolla nameplate, albeit now in a taller body to attract a market that’s skewing towards crossovers and SUVs.
