All-New BMW 1 Series Makes PH Debut With A P2.690M Starting Price

The new BMW 1 Series is now front-wheel-drive.

SMC Asian Car Distributors Corp., the official BMW distributor in the Philippines, officially launches the all-new, front-wheel-drive (FWD) 1 Series premium hatchback on the first day of the BMW Joyfest 2020, which runs from February 21 to 23, 2020. The first-ever FWD BMW 1 Series now uses the same platform that underpins the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Grand Tourer, BMW X1, BMW X2, and Mini Countryman.

The exterior has seen a major redesign, now sporting completely different proportions when compared to its rear-wheel-drive (RWD) predecessors. The hood is shorter, due to the engine being mounted transversely instead of longitudinally. Its front fascia is characterized by a large kidney grille and diagonally-aligned LED headlights, while the overall side profile bears a strong resemblance with the BMW X2, especially at the C-pillar. Large LED taillights and a rear diffuser for the M135i highlight the sporty rear fascia of the new 1 Series. The performance-oriented M135i gets sportier exterior bits such as an actual rear diffuser, five twin-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, and more aggressive bumpers.

The all-new 1 Series’ shorter hood and larger greenhouse highlight the car’s increased interior space, in which previous generations were severely lacking. There’s an extra 19 mm of headroom, 33 mm of additional legroom, and 13 mm of elbowroom. Additionally, the new car features 380 liters of cargo space, 20 liters more than the outgoing model. As standard, the 118i gets the base version of BMW’s iDrive 7, which uses an 8.8-inch screen, while the top trim M135i gets the higher-powered version with a 10.25-inch screen that features gesture control and a fully digital instrument cluster.

As for advanced safety and convenience features, both 118i and M135i xDrive variants get front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera, and Parking Assistant semi-automated parking system. Splurging for the performance-oriented M135i xDrive adds lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, as well as automatic emergency braking.

The BMW 1 Series range kicks off with the 118i, which uses a 1.5-liter inline-3 turbo petrol engine that produces 140 hp and 220 Nm of torque, enough to send the 1 Series from zero to 100 kph in 8.5 seconds. The top trim M135i xDrive features a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo petrol engine that produces 306 hp and 450 Nm of torque, enough for the car to sprint from zero to 100 kph in just 4.8 seconds all the way to an electronically-limited 250 kph top speed. In addition, the M135i gets M Sport brakes and an adaptive suspension system with vehicle damper control.

These are the prices of the all-new 1 Series. Both models come with a 5-year or 200,000-kilometer
manufacturer’s warranty, setting a new standard in the premium automotive segment in the Philippines. If you want to personally see these new hatchbacks, you may visit the BMW Joyfest 2020 at Bonifacio High Street until February 23, 2020, or your preferred BMW dealer.
