The Philippine automotive industry is going through one of its most difficult times. The COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down auto sales in our country. As such, every good news in the automotive industry is worth mentioning. The Geely Coolray–which went on sale last year during Geely’s brand launch, became the best-selling subcompact SUV for the month of June.
These sales figures are based on the latest CAMPI and AVID sales reports. 154 units of the Geely Coolray were sold at its sole dealership in North EDSA. As a brand itself, Geely Philippines is the 10th most popular brand during the month of June with 184 units combined sales of Coolray and the recently launched Azkarra. This is also the brand’s highest monthly sales record since January of this year. As for its sales figures for 2020, the brand has already sold 549 vehicles.
Ever since the Geely Coolray came to the Philippine market, many motorists drew praise for its combination of style, high-tech features, and performance. Its powertrain is worthy of attention. It’s powered by a small but mighty 1.5-liter inline-3 turbocharged petrol engine co-developed with Volvo. This turbo engine produces an impressive 177 hp @ 5,500 rpm and a meaty torque figure of 255 Nm from a low as 1,500 rpm to 4,000 rpm. Power is sent through the front wheels via a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which means this DCT should be able to withstand the congestion that Metro Manila has to offer.
Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP) President and CEO Mikihisa Takayama said, “This is definitely a very positive development as every auto brand try to bounce back during this post-ECQ period. We are very delighted of this outcome since it is mainly driven by one model, the Coolray and only one showroom located in North EDSA”.
“We expect Geely sales to improve further as we open new dealership outlets and further complement our product line up this year.”, Takayama added.
