Mercedes-Benz Philippines is on an SUV offensive this year as it launches yet another crossover SUV to add to its growing lineup. The all-new, second-generation 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA has officially been launched in the Philippines, sitting below the recently-launched GLB 7-seater compact luxury SUV.
As the brand’s smallest SUV, the all-new GLA mainly targets young and affluent buyers who are either single or are still starting to have a family. Measuring at 4,410 mm long, 1,834 mm wide, and 1,611 mm tall, this all-new GLA is 7 mm shorter, 30 mm wider, and 197 mm taller than the previous model. Wheelbase has also grown by 30 mm, which should provide occupants more legroom. These slight dimensional changes make the all-new GLA have a more SUV-like stance compared to the previous generation model which merely looked like a raised hatchback.
Compared to the mechanically-related 7-seater GLB, the 5-seater GLA is a much more lifestyle-oriented offering. This is reflected in its more youthful design language. It looks curvier and sleeker than the more upright and boxy GLB, which is perfect for the younger demographic that Mercedes-Benz is targeting with the GLA. For now, only one variant is offered here in the Philippines: the GLA 200 AMG Line. This variant is characterized by its wide grille, sporty front bumpers with satin silver trims, and 19-inch five twin-spoke AMG Line alloy wheels. Full LED headlights, adaptive LED taillights, and roof rails further enhance the GLA’s striking appearance.
The interior design of the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA features a stylish dashboard that’s dominated by a pair of 7-inch screens. Both screens are powered by the new MBUX infotainment system, which is controlled either via the console-mounted touchpad, touch screen, or the Intelligent Personal Assistant voice command system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as well in the MBUX infotainment system. Other interior features of the GLA 200 AMG Line include configurable ambient LED lighting, Artico synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable driver’s seat.
Under the hood of the all-new 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 AMG Line is a 1.3-liter inline-4 turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 163 hp and 250 Nm of torque, with power being sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Other variants are also in the pipeline for the Philippine market, such as the high-performance Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 and GLA 45.
As for safety, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 AMG Line is equipped as standard with automatic emergency braking (marketed as Active Brake Assist), autonomous Active Park Assist, and Attention Assist, which warns the driver if the vehicle detects signs drowsiness. This comes on top of the usual plethora of airbags, cruise control, electronic stability control, and even a tire pressure monitoring system.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA is now on sale across all Mercedes-Benz dealers in the Philippines with a starting price of P3,290,000 for this sole GLA 200 variant. Mercedes-Benz Philippines says there’s a huge demand for the all-new GLA, but only 20 units are currently available for now. If you want one, be sure to order one asap before the queue gets even longer.
