Spy photos showing a sporty Toyota Vios with Gazoo Racing embellishments have recently been making rounds on the internet. Today, this news has been confirmed with the launch of the new 2021 Toyota Vios GR Sport (GR-S) in Malaysia by UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT). The sporty version of Toyota’s humble Vios was launched alongside the 261-hp GR Yaris hot hatch, making Malaysia the second country in the ASEAN region to receive this highly-anticipated high-performance car.
These official press photos are courtesy of Malaysian automotive website paultan.org, and we can see that Toyota has spent quite an effort to transform the humble Vios into something more emotional.
Based on the recently-launched 2021 Toyota Vios, the new GR Sport variant is characterized by its unique aggressive front fascia. There’s also the expected side skirts along with a completely unique rear bumper design. For an even more aggressive stance, the Vios GR Sport rides on a set of sporty 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 205/45 R17 tires. And then to top it all off, there’s a GR Sport badge at the rear of the car, signifying the Vios’ newfound sporting intentions.
Toyota has also upgraded the Vios GR Sport’s interior, featuring leather-suede sport seats with embossed GR logos, GR floor carpets, GR push-button start, and GR-specific gauges. Lastly, there are the obligatory red stitching details in the steering, shift knob and doors for an even sportier vibe.
Don’t dismiss the Vios GR Sport as merely a marketing exercise to sell more of these subcompact sedans, though. Apart from the sportier exterior and interior styling, the CVT gearbox has been re-tuned to feature 10 simulated gears instead of the usual 7 found in the standard Vios. The “10-speed” CVT can be activated via Sport mode or using the steering-mounted paddle shifters. In addition, Toyota has also added a stiffer suspension setup to the Vios GR Sport, reducing body roll and improving high-speed cornering. Despite this, Toyota says that the sportier suspension offers a balance between comfort and sportiness.
As for safety features, the Vios GR Sport is fitted with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of advanced driver-assist systems, which includes automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. This comes on top of 7 airbags, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera system. How we wish that these active safety features were also offered in the Philippine-market Vios.
The 2021 Toyota Vios GR Sport is now on sale in Malaysia at select Toyota dealers with a price of MYR 97,500 or around PHP 1,163,782. We certainly do hope that this souped-up Toyota Vios gets sold here in the Philippines.
