Jeeps have mainly been a vehicle that has attracted adventurous males, but that isn’t completely the case these days. As consumer preferences have shifted over the years, more and more people have appreciated the appeal of having a taller vehicle with better ground clearance. Not only does this benefit the vehicle when going on uneven terrain, but the higher sitting position of crossovers and SUVs are usually within the natural hip height of the average human. This makes it easier for occupants to get in and out of the vehicle. As a result, more and more women are appreciating the value of a slightly taller vehicle than your average passenger car. Case in point: this all-new Jeep Compass.
From the outside, the Jeep Compass carries a striking look. The iconic seven-slotted grille makes it immediately noticeable as a Jeep. It looks brawny whilst still appealing to a wider demographic. There’s also a pair of neat LED position lamps that give the Compass a striking look. In addition, the rear end features a striking pair of LED taillights. Oh, and because this is a Jeep, who can ever forget the sheer amount of hidden “easter eggs” this SUV has? There’s a lot to talk about but that’s a story for another day.
Thankfully, the Jeep Compass isn’t just about having a pretty face. The interior is quite modern, too. Upfront, drivers will definitely enjoy Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) well-loved 7-inch UConnect infotainment system. The user interface is snappy and very responsive. Plus most of the icons are quite large, meaning it’s easy to tap the icons while on the move. There’s also Apple CarPlay smartphone integration that lets you access your Spotify playlist easily, along with Waze for real-time traffic updates.
We at Go Flat Out PH love panoramic sunroofs, so consider us happy to find out that the Jeep Compass has one. Not only does it bring in a lot of light when the shade is open, but the large front half of the glass can easily be opened. It’s basically the second-best thing to owning a convertible, but with the benefit of having four of your other friends also enjoying al fresco road trips.
The sheer practicality and usability offered by the Compass is something that my wife truly appreciates. Not only that, but thanks to the aforementioned panoramic sunroof and other features, the Jeep Compass is both practical and ready for adventure. Of course, adventures are always better if you’ve got friends with you. Thankfully, they’ll appreciate the generous space on all seats, along with the three charging ports and rear aircon vents. Your friends also do not need to pack light as its 438-liter trunk can accommodate all of their bags or even a whole set of camping gear for a weekend trip to the woods.
Out on the open road, the Jeep Compass does not disappoint as a road trip cruiser. Under its hood is FCA’s 1.4-liter Multiair turbocharged inline-4 gasoline engine that produces 162 hp and 250 Nm of torque. This powertrain drives the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Once the engine and gearbox are in rhythm with each other, power delivery is excellent and relentless. The great low-end torque means you don’t have to rev the engine as hard in order to overtake.
Perhaps the best part about the Jeep Compass’ driving experience is its stability and high-speed refinement. Road and wind noise is well suppressed. Yet when you bring it out on twisty roads, the Jeep Compass is willing to have a little bit of fun. This is thanks to its electric steering that’s responsive to your inputs.
Don’t mistake the Jeep Compass as a vehicle that’s all about fun and adventure, because with it are a plethora of safety features to keep you away from accidents. This includes traction and stability control, reverse camera, Rain Brake Support for safer braking during emergency situations, Electronic Roll Mitigation to keep your vehicle upright during evasive maneuvers, just to name a few.
The Jeep Compass has truly left a mark on my wife. She considers it as an SUV that’s practical when you need it, yet fun and ready for the weekend when you want it to. While most people buy a car for practical purposes, the Jeep Compass more than delivers on simply being a mode of transportation. It’s an SUV that truly sets new directions for one’s self. Whatever goal you’ve set for yourself this year, the Jeep Compass will be more than willing to help you achieve it.
