Nearly a year after the launch of the GMC Hummer EV electric pickup, its SUV counterpart which is straightforwardly called the GMC Hummer EV SUV, has finally been unveiled.
Just like the electric pickup version, the GMC Hummer EV SUV features the same striking front end. At night, the front grille is illuminated. This is then flanked by a pair of slim LED headlights. As with every highly capable off-road machine, this electric SUV features a front skid plate and D-rings when the vehicle needs to be towed.
The “Infinity Roof” design language of the pickup is carried over to its SUV sibling, along with its Sky Panel removable roof system and flared front and rear fenders. The major difference is its enclosed rear, with the tailgate now featuring a spare tire.
The GMC Hummer EV SUV rides on GM’s Ultium dedicated electric vehicle (EV) platform which will also be used on two future Honda EVs bound for North America. This unique platform features a very long wheelbase of 3.2 meters, which gives it excellent interior space for five.
Drivers will be greeted by a 12.3-inch fully-digital gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch touch screen infotainment system. GMC also spent a huge effort in making the interior feel as premium and luxurious as possible, thanks to the use of soft-touch plastics and stitched surfaces.
As expected with cars riding on dedicated EV platforms, the GMC Hummer EV SUV features a spacious front trunk (frunk) since there is no need for an engine bay in the first place. In addition, the rear trunk is able to accommodate as much as 2,316 liters of cargo. The side-hinged tailgate also enables the GMC Hummer EV SUV to have a 48-inch wide aperture, which should make it easy for owners to load large items.
The GMC Hummer EV SUV will be available in two powertrain configurations. The 2 and 2X variants feature dual motors with a combined output of 625 hp and an astonishing 10,033 Nm of torque. The 2 variant has a range of more than 402 kilometers and 400V charging technology while the 2X has a faster 800V charging capability and can supposedly go beyond 483 kilometers when fully charged.
Sitting at the top of the range are the 3X and Edition 1 variants, which feature three electric motors with a combined output of 830 hp and an even more Earth-shattering 15,592 Nm of torque. GMC claims a 0-60 mph (96 kph) acceleration time of just 3.5 seconds for this variant.
Despite being a large SUV, the clever packaging of the electric motors means that it has a relatively short turning radius of 5.4 meters, which puts it on par with smaller pickups like the Mitsubishi Strada. In addition, the 2X, 3X, and Edition 1 variants feature a 4 Wheel Steer system that enabled the SUV to “crab walk” or drive diagonally.
Buyers of the Edition 1 variant can also opt for the Extreme Off-Road Package, which is not available in its pickup sibling. This package adds 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch off-road tires, rock sliders, added underbody protection, heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts, and an UltraVision camera system that offers numerous views around this electric SUV, including what’s underneath it.
The GMC Hummer EV SUV is destined to go on sale in early 2023 with the Edition 1 first coming out. This will be followed by the 2X and 3X variants by spring 2023 and then the entry-level 2 variant by spring 2024.
