The all-new Hyundai Alcazar has just been unveiled in India and it also happens to be the South Korean automaker’s first foray into the subcompact 7-seater SUV segment that’s popular in markets like India and Southeast Asia.
Based on the subcompact Creta, it’s no surprise that the two crossover SUVs look similar, though Hyundai’s designers did a good job of transforming the Alcazar into merely just a longer version of the Creta. For instance, the grille and headlights are quite different. It’s also the same case for its side profile and rear, wherein Hyundai’s designers integrated the added length seamlessly to the Creta’s design.
Hyundai has not yet provided any interior photos, though based on their sketch, the dashboard layout is similar to the Creta’s. This means that a fully digital gauge cluster and 10.25-inch touch screen should come at least as standard on higher variants. In addition, the Creta will be available in six or seven seats, with the former featuring a fixed rear center console.
Powering the Hyundai Alcazar are two engine choices–a 2.0-liter inline-4 Nu gasoline engine or a 1.5-liter inline-4 turbo diesel engine. The former produces a class-leasing 157 hp and 191 Nm of torque, which is significantly more than its 1.5-liter gasoline rivals. On the other hand, the diesel mill produces 113 hp and 250 Nm. Both engines power the front wheels via a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Hyundai claims that with the 2.0-liter gasoline engine and 6-speed automatic, 0-100 kph happens in less than 10 seconds.
Hyundai is also particularly proud of the Alcazar’s highly-rigid structure, which is composed of 75.6 percent advanced and high-strength steel (AHSS and HSS), the highest among its competitors. This is thanks to Hyundai being a conglomerate, and one of its other businesses is the manufacturing of steel.
With these kinds of vehicles being popular in the ASEAN region, we certainly hope that Hyundai will eventually offer the Alcazar in the Philippines.
