Facelifted 2022 Audi A8 Debuts With Styling And Tech Upgrades

The facelifted 2022 Audi A8 has been unveiled today, and it comes with a host of aesthetic and tech upgrades.

The current fourth-generation Audi A8 flagship luxury sedan has been on sale since 2017, therefore a mid-cycle facelift was pretty much expected. Say hello to the 2022 Audi A8, which should keep this full-size luxury sedan interesting until its fully-electric successor arrives within the next few years.

Most of the changes to the 2022 Audi A8 were made in its front end. The pre-facelift model’s Singleframe grille had horizontal lines, but for this iteration, the grille now has a mesh pattern. The lower front fascia has also been redesigned and it now features larger side air intakes. For the first time ever, an S Line variant (as shown in blue) is being offered, which swaps out all the chrome trims for gloss black ones and gets a bespoke front bumper.

The new Audi A8 also includes a redesigned pair of Digital Matrix LED headlights which feature 1.3 million micromirrors in each headlight, enabling the system to relay information or even project images or lane markings onto the road at night.

Lastly, there are also new alloy wheel designs and new digital OLED taillights that are equipped as standard on all variants. The OLED taillights also have a proximity indication feature that further brightens up the taillights if there’s a vehicle that’s within 2 meters from the rear of a stationary A8.

The interior of the 2022 Audi A8 remains largely unchanged, though the MMI infotainment system now has an intelligent personal assistant. Just like its major rivals, the system can be summoned by simply saying “Hey, Audi!”.  MMI is operated through the twin 10.1-inch upper screen and 8.6-inch lower screen, and this works in conjunction with the fully-digital Audi Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster. Also now equipped as standard is online and Car-2-X services from Audi connect, which links the A8 with various infrastructure such as stoplights, though we highly doubt this function will work in the Philippine market.

Various options can be added, such as a 1,920 Watt Bang & Olufsen surround sound system, twin 10.1-inch rear screens, and even a relaxation seat, which is shown in these photos with the brown leather interior. These ultra-exclusive seats include a back massage with 18 pneumatic cushions, electrically adjustable comfort headrests, and four-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning. If these still aren’t luxurious enough for you, the optional continuous center console with optional fold-out tables and rear center fridge might finally satisfy your luxury needs.

Three engine choices are available for the 2022 Audi A8, all of which are mated to an 8-speed automatic and  Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive (AWD) system. The first is a turbo 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine that produces 340 hp, while those who want even more power can get a 4.0-liter turbo V8 gasoline engine that produces 460 hp and 660 Nm of torque.

2022 Audi S8

If these two engines are still not fast enough for you, then you can opt for the performance-oriented S8. Its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 now pumps out 571 hp and 800 Nm of torque and does the 0-100 kph run in just 3.8 seconds. This performance model also gets the predictive active suspension, sport differential, and dynamic all-wheel steering as standard right out of the factory.

As with every modern car nowadays, the 2022 Audi A8 comes with a suite of advanced driver-assistance tech. In the case of the A8, these are clustered into three packages: Park, City, and Tour.

The highlight of the “Park” package is the remote park assist plus, which can automatically maneuver the large sedan into and out of a parallel or bay parking space. The driver does not even need to be in the car for it to do that.

The “City” assist package includes intersection assist, cross-traffic assist, side assist, exit warning, and the Audi pre sense 360-degree safety system, which induces a side crash enhancement in combination with the active suspension.

The “Tour” assist package, which is standard in Germany, is particularly comprehensive. Its central system is adaptive cruise assist, which adjusts longitudinal and lateral guidance throughout the vehicle’s speed range.

The 2022 Audi A8 will first go on sale in Europe this December, with other markets following shortly. A Philippine launch will most likely happen in the middle of 2022.
