Honda is electrifying its entire lineup, but this effort is most prominently felt in Europe wherein every single model in its lineup in the region are either self-charging hybrids or a fully electric vehicle (EV). Completing the electrified lineup is the 2022 Honda Civic Hybrid, which surprisingly is even more powerful compared to the turbo version.
Let’s start with the main headline figure–its hybrid powertrain. The 2022 Honda Civic Hybrid comes with a 2.0-liter Atkinson Cycle naturally-aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine that has a very high thermal efficiency of 41 percent–one of the highest in the industry. Combined with two electric motors, the e:HEV powertrain has a system output of 183 hp and a whopping 315 Nm of torque. That’s 5 hp and 75 Nm more than the turbocharged Civic.
Mated to this powertrain is a fixed gear automatic transmission, driving the front wheels. It’s not a CVT per se, but more of a single-speed transmission that’s designed to complement the electric motors and gasoline engine as needed. With this powertrain, the Civic Hybrid is able to achieve 20 km/l, which is crucial at a time when gas prices are high.
Other than its powertrain, it’s still the Civic we’ve come to know and love. The 2022 Honda Civic Hybrid will be available only as a hatchback in Europe, while a sedan version will be sold elsewhere. Its design is practically the same as the standard Civic, though the European version comes with more advanced adaptive matrix LED headlights on higher variants.
It’s basically the same case with its interior, wherein Honda went for a minimalist and simple approach to make it easy to operate. Premium materials are plentiful, with a soft-touch upper dash and door panels along with an aluminum honeycomb pattern for the air vents. A fully-digital instrument cluster and 9-inch infotainment system with a Bose sound system are also offered on higher trims, along with a panoramic sunroof.
The 2022 Honda Civic Hybrid will first go on sale in Europe this fall before eventually being offered everywhere else around the world.
