2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Electric SUV Debuts With Up To 600 KM Range

The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will serve as the flagship of the brand's electric SUV range, and it expectedly comes with a lot of tech.

Mercedes-Benz debuted the EQS flagship electric luxury sedan last year. It’s basically the S-Class in the brand’s EQ range of electric vehicles (EVs), and if the GLS is the flagship of the brand’s SUV range, how would you name their electric full-size luxury SUV? Apparently, it’s simply called the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and it will serve as the pinnacle of the EQ SUV range.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is also the brand’s first-ever SUV to ride on a dedicated EV platform, as opposed to the EQA and EQC, which are merely electric versions of their combustion engine counterparts, namely the GLA and GLC, respectively.

As such, its styling is completely different compared to the brand’s other electric SUVs. Upfront, there’s a black panel faux grille treatment where the forward-facing sensors are hidden. Above it is an LED strip that connects the two LED headlights. The overall smooth lines and curvaceous shape are all due to aerodynamics. Whether you’re a fan of it or not, expect all upcoming EQ vehicles from Mercedes to follow this design theme that they call “Sensual Purity”. Also, a staple of the Mercedes EQ range is its full-width LED light bar that emphasizes the car’s width.

Without the constraint of originally housing a combustion engine, the EQS SUV is able to have a short hood, and thus make more room for the passenger cell. This results in a full-size SUV that looks deceivingly compact. In reality, this is one big boy, measuring 5,130 mm long, 1,955 mm wide, and 1,727 mm tall.

As for the interior, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will share the same basic design as the EQS sedan, which means that the 56-inch MBUX Hyperscreen is offered here as an option. By default, the EQS SUV will come with a 12.8-inch MBUX touch screen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that’s similar to what’s found in the S-Class.

Those seated at the rear seats aren’t deprived of screens, either. The EQS SUV can be optioned with a rear-seat entertainment system that consists of two 11.6-inch screens. There’s also the option to add a third center console-mounted tablet that acts as a controller, and you can even bring the tablet out of the vehicle for a certain distance.

Also offered as an option is third-row seating. Thanks to the EQS SUV’s flat floor provided by the dedicated EV platform, there’s plenty of space on all three rows. Oh, and with the car’s MBUX infotainment system, the vehicle can even remember the preferences of each passenger based on where they are seated.

Powering the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV are two powertrain setups. The base EQS 450 offers 355 hp and 568 Nm of torque, and this is rear-wheel drive (RWD) as standard and all-wheel drive (AWD) as an option extra. There’s also a range-topping EQS 580 that’s AWD as standard and produces 536 hp and 858 Nm of torque.

Mercedes has not yet announced the range of each version, but they say that it can travel up to 600 km in a full charge, which is 170 km less than the EQS sedan. Thankfully, it can add 300 km of range in just a 15-minute charge, therefore charging stops should be short and bearable.

As expected, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV comes with a host of driver-assistance tech that includes and PRE-SAFE PLUS including PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC (adaptive cruise control), Active Lane Keeping and Blind Spot Assist, Active Stop-and-Go Assist, Active Steering Assist, and Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will go on sale in late 2022 in North America and Europe. Do you think that Mercedes-Benz Philippines should also begin offering their EV range here in the Philippines?
