The Tesla Model Y Is Now The World’s 4th Best-Selling Car

The world's best-selling cars are still mostly Toyotas, but having a Tesla Model Y in the top 5 best-selling cars should spook the industry.

2022 was good for Toyota. It’s still the world’s largest brand in terms of sales, but there’s a reason for them not to be complacent. The Japanese automaker has been slow to adopt electric vehicles (EVs), long arguing that there’s too low of a demand for such vehicles as well insisting on a multi-solution approach towards carbon neutrality. However, it seems Tesla is proving that otherwise because one of its models is now in the top 5 of the world’s best-selling cars.

The Tesla Model Y Is Now The World's 4th Best-Selling Car

That’s right, for the first time, an EV in the form of the Tesla Model Y has cracked into the top 5 best-selling cars in the world. From a report by Focus2Move, the Tesla Model Y is the brand’s best-seller and the fourth best-selling car worldwide with 758,792 units sold last year. That’s a sizeable 88.5 percent growth in sales compared to the year before.

Overall, Toyota still accounts for three models in the top 10 list, but Tesla, with only four models in its lineup, is somehow reshaping the status quo. That’s because most of the cars on the list experienced a decline in sales. While EVs as a whole still represents a small proportion of sales globally, there’s no other way to go but up for EV sales worldwide as the world faces a shift towards battery-powered vehicles.

This is the full list of the top 10 best-selling cars in the world for 2022:

  1. Toyota Corolla: 1.12 million (-2.2%)
  2. Toyota RAV4: 871,220 (-13.7%)
  3. Ford F-Series: 786,303 (-8.8%)
  4. Tesla Model Y: 758,792 (+88.5%)
  5. Toyota Camry: 676,845 (-2.7%)
  6. Honda CR-V: 602,675 (-17.8%)
  7. Chevrolet Silverado: 591,594 (+1.8%)
  8. Hyundai Tucson: 565,100 (+1.2%)
  9. Toyota Hilux: 564,759 (+2.7%)
  10. Ram 1500: 545,423 (-15.4%)

Tesla is also the world’s best-selling EV manufacturer, and that’s an achievement in its own right as the automaker is positioned in the premium segment. The Tesla Model Y is also much more expensive than the cars it outsold last year, such as the Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, and Toyota Hilux, just to name a few.
