Electrification is at the heart of Chery Auto Philippines’ booth at the 2023 Manila International Auto Show as they preview the mild hybrid versions of the Tiggo 5X Pro and 7 Pro. The two crossover SUVs bring forth the Chinese automaker’s electrification plans, which not only cover plug-in hybrids as seen in the Tiggo 8 Pro but across the entire model range.

While the two models are called the Chery Tiggo 5X Pro Hybrid and Tiggo 7 Pro Hybrid, they’re actually mild hybrids in a similar fashion to the Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid or Geely Okavango. Like those cars, the alternator has been replaced by a belt-driven Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) with 48 volts in the case of these two crossovers. It provides assistance and efficiency gains to the 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine, thus giving the system a total output of 160 hp and 250 Nm of torque. This is all sent to the front wheels via a CVT.
Of course, the benefit as well of offering a mild hybrid powertrain is the smoothness that it adds to the driving experience. As with cars like these two, the brakes recapture energy that would otherwise simply become heat, and the 48-volt system also smoothens out the roughness of the engine start/stop system. Lastly, the assistance provided by the electric motors also means that this will fill in the torque gaps in the engine’s power band–thus theoretically resulting in more linear and instantaneous power delivery.
For now, the Chery Tiggo 5X Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro hybrids are just being previewed at the 2023 Manila International Auto Show. The vehicle is expected to be launched soon, with pricing and specifications to be revealed at its official launch date.
