Tamaraw Is Back! 2025 Toyota Tamaraw Previewed Ahead Of PH Launch

The 2025 Toyota Tamaraw is back! It's once again here to challenge the Mitsubishi L300 and other commercial vehicles in its segment.

After being revealed last November in Thailand as the Hilux Champ, the iconic Toyota Tamaraw nameplate is back once again to challenge the Mitsubishi L300. Previewed as the Tamaraw Concept at the 35th-anniversary celebration of Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP), the 2025 Toyota Tamaraw will be produced locally at the company’s Santa Rosa, Laguna manufacturing plant, but that’s only some of the details that have been confirmed so far.

What else has been confirmed is that it will be offered in five body styles: Pickup (both in base and high grade), Patrol Vehicle, FX, Ambulance, and Cargo. The high-grade Pickup version is what’s the most surprising due to its somewhat upmarket positioning. For instance, the high-grade Pickup comes with premium features like full LED headlights, alloy wheels, and even an interior that has a 2DIN infotaiment system and the option for an automatic transmission.

Yes, that’s also confirmed, too. There will be an automatic transmission option, which is confirmed to be one of the choices for the 2.4-liter D-4D turbo diesel option. Codenamed 2GD-FTV, it’s the same engine that’s in the Hilux and Fortuner, and it produces 150 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque if fitted with the 5-speed manual, or 400 Nm with the 6-speed automatic.

The gas engine choice, however, has not yet been confirmed. Globally, there are two choices– a 2.0-liter gasoline (codenamed 1TR-FE) engine that produces 139 horses and 183 Nm, while the bigger 2.7-liter gasoline (aka the 2TR-FE) produces 166 horses and 245 Nm of torque. The former comes solely with a 5-speed manual, while the latter is exclusive with a 6-speed automatic.

Having mentioned those five body styles, there are also two wheelbase options that correspond to one of those five body styles. The standard wheelbase measures 2,750 mm between the front and rear axles with a bed size of 2,312 mm, while the long wheelbase version has a 3,085 mm gap between the front and rear axles and a bed length of 2,647 mm. It is still unknown if TMP will be offering a cab-only body style, where you can commission a third-party manufacturer to build a body on top of the frame.

The 2025 Toyota Tamaraw will be officially launched within the year, with local production likewise also commencing before the end of the year.
