302-HP 2025 Toyota Alphard PHEV Debuts With 73 KM EV Range

The 2025 Toyota Alphard PHEV is the most powerful variant of the popular luxury MPV, packing 302 hp and 73 km of pure electric range.

Toyota continues to make incremental steps in its path toward electrification as it believes that a multi-solution approach is the best way forward. This is especially true in places where the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is at varying paces. That’s where the new 2025 Toyota Alphard PHEV comes in, which satisfied your need for a luxury MPV with good enough electric range but with the reassurance of a gasoline engine.

Of course, the main highlight of the 2025 Toyota Alphard PHEV is its new 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The Alphard PHEV uses the same 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle Dynamic Force engine from the Alphard Hybrid that’s on sale in the Philippines, but in this application, its power output is much less at 177 horsepower versus 188 horsepower in its hybrid application. That’s because the electric motor in the Alphard PHEV is a lot more powerful, wherein the electric motor driving the front wheels produces 180 horsepower, while the rear electric motor produces 54 horsepower.

In typical Toyota fashion, the total system output isn’t calculated by mere addition of the electric motors and the gasoline engine, since the two power sources produce their peak power at different RPM ranges. Nevertheless, with a total system output of 302 horsepower, it’s significantly more powerful than the 248 horses that the Alphard Hybrid is capable of producing.

Now, a plug-in hybrid’s main selling point is its ability to be used in pure electric mode for much longer distances than in a standard hybrid system. In the case of the Alphard PHEV, it has an electric range of 73 km under the WLTC cycle (slightly different from the WLTP testing cycle). The lithium-ion nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery can be charged via both AC and even DC rapid charging of up to 50 kW, which is good enough for a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 38 minutes.

Toyota also says that the Alphard PHEV offers improved comfort levels. To augment the PHEV drivetrain’s improved quietness, the air conditioning can now engage its compressor without the engine needing to run, which the Japanese automaker says is useful from an environmental perspective when the driver waits for its passengers. Finally, Toyota also added a Smooth Stop control system, which programs the brakes to eliminate nose dives when coming to a stop.

Lastly, in terms of looks, the 2025 Toyota Alphard PHEV sets itself apart with its PHEV badging and unique 19-inch wheels with a silver sputtering finish. As for the interior, the headliner is made out of Ultrasuede, while the steering wheel also features woodgrain.
