Toyota’s electric vehicle (EV) efforts have been mostly considered middling next to what brands like Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) are capable of doing. The Japanese automaker continues to push out hybrids as it sees these vehicles as the common ground for electrified vehicles across multiple markets. Thankfully, however, the 2025 Toyota bZ4X introduces a slew of changes that finally makes this compact electric crossover worth considering.

First and foremost, the new bZ4X comes with new batteries and electric motors. There’s a new entry-level 57.7 kWh battery pack, which is available solely in front-wheel drive (FWD). This version gets 165 horsepower and 445 kilometers of WLTP-rated range. That FWD version is also available in a more powerful motor and a new, larger 73.1 kWh battery, which in this case, produces 221 horsepower and offers an impressive driving range of up to 573 kilometers. Finally, the range-topping all-wheel drive (AWD) model uses this larger battery but adds a rear electric motor that bumps up the total system output to 338 horsepower and a still-impressive 520 kilometers of range.
The larger batteries also come with improved energy density and more battery cells. The electric motors also come with silicon carbide semiconductors, among other efficiency improvements. Toyota has also made crucial charging improvements. AC charging on higher-spec variants is now capped at 22 kW versus 11 kW on the previous version, though this is still the max charging speed of lower trims. DC fast charging speeds, however, are still unchanged at 150 kW, which is off the pace versus the 350 kW that a Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5 are capable of.

As for its design, the 2025 Toyota bZ4X comes with a few changes. These are all limited to the front fascia, in which the bZ4X now adopts the so-called “Hammerhead” front fascia. This is characterized by its C-shaped LED daytime running lights that are visually connected by a black horizontal trim piece. The main LED headlights have also been separated from the LED daytime running lights. The rest of the vehicle remains unchanged, but a new set of alloy wheel designs have been introduced.

Likewise, the interior changes are minor, but they are noticeable. The dashboard design is new because this is now meant to incorporate the new, larger 14-inch infotainment system. The aircon controls have also been integrated into the screen, but thankfully, there are still knobs for quick adjustments. There are also more ambient LED light strips around the interior, as well as an available JBL premium sound system.

The 2025 Toyota bZ4X will first go on sale in Europe, while a global rollout should begin right after. It is still unknown if it will be offered in the Philippine market, however.
