The Honda Civic Type R is saying goodbye, but not for the entire world. That’s because, over on the European continent, the legendary hot hatch is set to be discontinued after a 28-year run with the release of the Honda Civic Type R Ultimate Edition. If you think this has to do with weak demand, think again.

Like many sports cars these days, most have been discontinued due to ever-stricter fleet-wide average emissions regulations in Europe. But you might ask, why can Mercedes-Benz sell a plethora of V8-powered cars, while a turbo four-cylinder Civic Type R couldn’t be sold?
Well, that’s because Mercedes-Benz has a bunch of egg-shaped EV under the EQ line, along with so many plug-in hybrids. Honda, however, only has one EV in the form of the HR-V-based e:Ny1, while the rest are normal hybrids, which instrumented tests would dictate that they have higher emissions than a plug-in hybrid.

Anyway, the 28-year run of the Honda Civic Type R won’t be going out in silence. With the new Ultimate Edition model, each of the 40 vehicles to be produced comes with the Type R’s signature Championship White, along with red stripes on the hood and the bottom of the side profile. There’s also a black painted roof, and various carbon fiber exterior bits, such as the rear wing.

Inside, the Honda Civic Type R Ultimate Edition comes with Type R puddle lamps, along with carbon fiber on the door sills and the center console. Finally, there’s additional interior lighting on the door lining, cup holders, footwells, and under the seats. The interior changes are very minor, and some may not even raise the pulse of its prospective buyers, but what will pique their interest is the gift box that comes with the vehicle. Inside the gift box is a carbon key ring, a numbered emblem, and together with the gift box is a set of custom floor mats and a car cover.
Powering the Honda Civic Type R Ultimate Edition is the same 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo four-cylinder, which in the European region produces 324 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque to the front wheels via a six-speed manual.
