Remember the Nissan Leaf? It was the pioneer of the mass-market EV, but being the first doesn’t always mean having a sustained lead. Unfortunately, the Leaf hasn’t really remained competitive, especially amid the rise of Tesla and, more recently, the Chinese EV brand. Thankfully, a new 2026 Nissan Leaf has just been revealed, marking the third generation of the pioneering EV.
Adapting to changing consumer preferences, the 2026 Nissan Leaf has evolved into a crossover SUV. Riding on the AmpR Medium platform shared with the Ariya, the new Leaf grows in every dimension while remaining compact enough. The new Leaf is now 4,350 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,550 mm in height.

Matching the crossover styling is Nissan’s most aerodynamic exterior design to date, with a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd. The curvaceous bodywork is matched with distinct LED headlights with a new interpretation of the brand’s signature boomerang-style LED daytime running lights. This is visually connected by an LED light bar on higher trims, along with a black trim piece below it.
Turning a new leaf (pun intended) is its new form factor, adopting a fastback silhouette that gives the Leaf a sleek side profile. This is matched with flush door handles at the front and rear door handles that are integrated into the C-pillar. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 19 inches, all of which feature an interesting geometric pattern. Lastly, the rear end has an interesting hollographic-style design for the LED taillights, but this is reserved for the range-topping models.

Like the exterior, the interior is also completely reinvented. The materials are now more premium, but Nissan has also increased the use of sustainable materials. Unsurprisingly, tech plays a major role inside the Leaf, with most interactions being made through the two 12.3-inch or twin 14.3-inch screens, depending on the variant. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are fitted as standard, while premium features that are available on higher-end models include a Bose sound system, a panoramic sunroof that uses electrochromic dimming instead of a typical shade, and a powered tailgate.
Globally, the 2026 Nissan Leaf is available in two battery packs and electric motor configurations. A 52 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is good for 436 km of WLTP-rated range, along with 174 horsepower and 344 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the larger 75 kWh battery is good for 604 km of range, and this also gets a more powerful electric motor with 214 horsepower and 355 Nm of torque. Both models are front-wheel drive (FWD), and all-wheel drive (AWD) is unavailable.
As for charging, the Leaf can be charged at up to 150 kW in DC fast charging, which is good for a ten to 80 percent charge in just 35 minutes.
The 2026 Nissan Leaf will first hit the North American, European, and Japanese markets this year. Whether it will be launched in the Philippines is still unknown, but here’s to hoping Nissan offers the new generation Leaf to remain competitive, especially as affordable Chinese EV brands flood our market.
