Next-Generation 2026 Mazda CX-5 Debuts, Hybrid Coming 2027

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 has officially made its debut, blending familiar looks, cutting-edge tech, and a newfound focus on comfort and space.

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 has finally made its debut following a teaser last week, replacing the now eight-year-old second-generation model. The CX-5 has become Mazda’s most important model over the years, and therefore, there is no room for error with this new generation model.

Starting with the looks, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 already has a unique design identity that helps it stand out on the road. Therefore, Mazda chose the evolutionary route instead of completely reinventing its design. The third-generation CX-5 debuts yet another evolution of Mazda’s Kodo design language, which in this case, features an evolution of the signature wing grille. The LED headlights now flow into the grille surround, while the chiseled front bumper creates a sportier front fascia.

At the sides, Mazda has carefully massaged its profile, giving it cleaner lines and sharper lines for the shoulders. The rear doors are also a lot longer than before, turning the CX-5 into a more family-friendly option. The rear window kicks up more aggressively this time around, which leads to its sculpted rear end. Speaking of which, for the first time in a CX-5, the tailgate ditches the Mazda wing logo in favor of the “MAZDA” lettering.

Perhaps receiving the biggest visual change is the CX-5’s interior, for both better and worse. While the interior continues to defy expectations in the segment with its premium materials and build quality, Mazda was one of the last fortresses for in-car physical knobs and buttons. Unfortunately, even the mightiest have fallen, as Mazda now went for the pure touchscreen route. In this case, the 15.6-inch is running Google-based software, thus making this the first CX-5 to be in the software-defined vehicle (SDV) era.

Entry-level versions will have a smaller 12.9-inch screen, which, in our opinion, is already big enough for most. Google services such as the Play Store and Google Maps come pre-loaded, and so are traditional Mazda premium features like a windshield-projected head-up display and a Bose sound system. Finally, there’s also a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, a panoramic sunroof, a seven-color LED ambient lighting system, and a lot more interior space, thanks to the significantly increased dimensions.

As for the powertrain, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 will continue to feature the familiar 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder that’s mated to a six-speed automatic, which means it still produces 190 horsepower and 251 Nm of torque. In Europe, there’s a 2.4-volt e-Skyactiv-G mild-hybrid version of the same 2.5-liter engine, but it produces less power and torque at 140 horsepower and 238 Nm. A six-speed automatic is also fitted to this engine.

Mazda in its investor presentations, revealed that the CX-5 is supposed to be getting a hybrid system, along with the Skyactiv-Z engine that uses the Lambda 1 combustion method. Well, that won’t be coming until 2027, so if you’re looking for an electrified CX-5 anytime soon, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.

In typical Mazda fashion, the CX-5 is tuned for a sporty driving experience. However, realizing that crossover SUVs are mostly for family use, the new CX-5 now offers an even better balance of ride and handling than before. Mazda revised the suspension setup with softer springs, adjusted the size of anti-roll bars, and carefully tuned the dampers to better absorb road imperfections. Additionally, rebound damping has been increased at both the front and rear.

At lower damper piston speeds, this provides better control and roadholding, especially during faster cornering, while still ensuring a smooth and stable ride. At higher damper piston speeds, the enhanced damping more effectively absorbs vibrations from uneven road surfaces, improving overall comfort. In addition, new tires enhance grip while reducing rolling resistance, for a more comfortable and stable ride across varied road conditions.

More detailed information about the 2026 Mazda CX-5 will be revealed as its on-sale date of early 2026 draws nearer. The next-generation CX-5 will first go on sale in North America, Japan, and Europe.
