Toyota GR Philippine Cup: Toyota’s Undeniable Significance In Filipino’s Lives

The Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup is a celebration of how the brand has become so significant in Filipino car culture.

Just describing it makes you want to be there: The sight of machines speeding by on the track, the smell of burnt rubber and fuel, and most notably, the sound of the beautiful internal combustion engine echoing through the grounds of Clark International Speedway. This is the unmistakable, visceral atmosphere of Philippine motorsport for all to see and feel, as delivered by Race Weekend 3 of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup, the celebration of Toyota motorsport in the Philippines in its current form, continuing the company’s relevance in the sporting and racing side of local car culture.

And as we’ve seen before, this isn’t just any event; Toyota Philippines has stretched out to bring us motoring fans a true spectacle, an event which comes with multiple race formats, displays, and exhibition sessions including the Vios cup, the car club meet, drag racing, and the newest of them all, the Tamaraw Sprint race which makes its debut in this same round of the GR Philippine cup.

The Vios Cup

The Vios Cup takes its final round for 2025 in this particular race weekend of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup with its familiar flair and format; the cars are back on the race-track from the previous street track stage as seen from the previous leg hosted in Villar City, and spectators are once again greeted with thrilling action from multiple race types including the sprint race, the super-sporting, sporting, and novice race classes, as well as the recently introduced “legacy class” which pits previous generation Vios cup cars against the current generation, adding a bit of a new-versus-old kind of thrill to the one-make-race series which I consider fun and admirable.

And as the multi-season event goes, the Vios cup did not fail to deliver; a wide variety of different drivers from different backgrounds and teams placed into cars with similar specs, and put into a series of sporting events reminiscent of intense grassroots racing, which spells fierce competition fought through hard driving and communication between driver and machine, and of course, between driver and driver, which often ends up as car-on-car contact; a sight that will surely make you stay at the edge of your seat.

The Tamaraw Racing Series

Arguably the most awaited race event in this particular leg of the series, the Tamaraw Sprint Race Exhibition brings the Philippines’ beloved workhorse into its racehorse form. This particular part of the GR cup puts souped up, one-make-race ready Tamaraws into two forms of racing: first, the sprint race which takes a similar circuit race setup as the Vios sprints, taking the Tamaraw into a corner-carving track session; and second, a drag race exhibition which showcases the race-grade Tamaraws’ straight line punch, even going so far as pitting the trucks against other cars in the exhibition such as the GR86.

This new series sheds some light on the performance side of things regarding the Toyota Tamaraw, which comes as a surprise since the vehicle itself is more associated as being tough, reliable, and utilitarian; it’s almost like seeing a side of a long-time friend which you didn’t know about, and when you do find out, it’s a pleasant surprise.

Toyota “Spec” in Retrospect

Speaking of long-time friends, the same can be said about Toyota’s cultural contribution towards Philippine motorsport as a whole, throughout even beyond the GR Cup series, as through new memories and old, the brand has been with us for quite a long, sweet time.

In a sort of reflection, it’s nice to have a look back at what once was in terms of the role that Toyota had in Philippine racing history. I’m personally a fan of earlier motorsport series because of how rudimentary everything was, so to speak; an era of steel, gasoline, and enthusiasm paving the way for local motorsport as we know it today.

And reflecting on that era, it’s impossible to not remember how Toyota drove its way to win the hearts of many through the widespread use of their cars in Philippine motorsport itself even back then, and a great example of that can be found off the asphalt circuit and onto the dirt: in the Philippine Rally racing series, with Toyotas driven by local motorsport legend Paeng Nodalo.

Through the 1980s, Paeng, alongside his Nodalo’s Rallye Team, raced through rally stages across the country with their competing car, none other than the rear-drive Toyota AE86.

With the team’s Toyota AE86’s and passionate drivers and navigators, the Nodalo’s Rallye team swept through early Philippine motorsport events, such as the Mabuhay International Rally wherein, by the early 1990s, the Nodalo’s AE86 competed against newer, all-wheel-drive cars such as the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 and held strong against all odds with a less-advanced drivetrain and powered by the fan-favorite Toyota 4AGE engine.

This is a prime example of Toyota’s role, even long before the GR era; it was a spectacle of sights and sound, the beautifully simple and visceral time of gasoline-burning, wide-open-throttle action with Toyota as an integral part of the whole cultural experience.

An Old Friend in New Times

In a way, the GR Cup brings the nostalgic, raw, and grassroots motorsport feel back somewhat, with fewer assists and advanced racing tech, and more of an emphasis on what the driver can do on four wheels. It’s a culmination and celebration of Toyota as a Filipino favorite brand beyond the ordinary now and in the years past; a cultural icon for motoring both in and out of the racing scene. And now here we are, history unfolding as Toyota continues its legacy in motoring passion.

But what makes Toyota cars and the culture behind it beautifully special especially within the context of the GR Cup and Philippine motorsport as a whole is the fact that, behind the intense sporting, tire burning, and passionate motoring endeavors are the same Toyota cars which we have grown to know as our trusted and reliable; the vehicles that serve as our partners in life as we go through the endurance event that is the reality of everyday living.

These same cars, which we have come to know as an integral part of our ordinary daily lives, continue to prove themselves to be beyond ordinary; for many of us, Toyota cars mean our passion projects, our fun, tossable machines, our race-winning builds, our comfort, and part of our home and livelihood. And through the Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup, it’s nice to see that Toyota remains a partner in life from old times to new, a partner that has gone the distance, and just keeps on going.
