2026 Honda Prelude Hybrid Sports Coupe Now On Sale In Japan

The 2026 Honda Prelude officially goes on sale in Japan today, but do you think Honda Cars Philippines will offer this in our market?

After a lengthy teaser campaign for the past two years or so, and 24 years since production ended, the 2026 Honda Prelude is finally ready to hit showrooms. But, before it goes on sale across the world, the Prelude is first hitting its home market of Japan by tomorrow, September 5.

As such, Honda has revealed every detail about the Prelude, but not yet its hybrid system’s total power output–even if it’s already going on sale tomorrow in Japan. Yes, in case you’re living under a rock, the Prelude is a hybrid coupe, using the 2.0-liter two-motor e:HEV system found in the Civic and CR-V. This drives the front wheels via a lockup clutch system that simply connects and disconnects the engine from the wheels. Honda simply markets it as an e-CVT for simplification purposes.

What Honda is proud to highlight with this hybrid system is that, being the newest generation e:HEV system, the Prelude’s drivetrain is geared towards sportiness. The current Civic and CR-V e:HEV have built-in pre-programmed simulated shift points for its hybrid system called Linear Shift Control. Building upon that is the Prelude’s new S+ Shift function, which induces actual shift shocks and a linear power delivery that simulates an eight-speed automatic. This is combined with Active Sound Control (ASC), which is also tied into the Prelude’s various drive modes.

Expect some of these features to make their way into future Honda hybrids, as previously announced during last year’s e:HEV tech workshop.

2026 Honda Prelude Will Inherit Some Of The Type R's Components

Honda also revealed earlier this year that the Prelude will inherit some of the soon-to-be-discontinued (for the Philippines) Civic Type R’s components. These include its dual-axis strut front suspension that nearly eliminates torque steer, along with a wider track for better stability and grip. Braking power comes courtesy of front Brembo brakes, while a faster steering calibration and Honda’s Agile Handling Assist torque vectoring by braking should make the Prelude a sporty yet reasonably comfortable coupe for daily use.

And that’s exactly the character of the 2026 Honda Prelude. Rather than be an all-out track machine, Honda has designed the Prelude to offer the long-distance comfort and just the right sportiness that a grand tourer (GT) would normally posses. That’s already evident from its new design language, which Honda calls “Unlimited Glide”.

Inspired by Honda’s aerospace division, the Prelude’s rakish silhouette is complemented by a low hood with raised, sculpted sections on the sides. This helps drivers properly place the vehicle when going through corners, or even aids in parking, for instance. The front fascia comes with wing-shaped LED headlights, while the side profile features sculpted lines with flush door handles. There’s also a functional air vent through the side rocker panels for improved aero.

Lastly, the rear end is both functional as it is beautiful. That’s because rather than having a simple trunk lid, the cargo area is actually accessed through a fastback liftgate. Yes, the rear windshield and “trunk lid” are actually engineered as one entire piece that you can lift. Speaking of which, that fastback tailgate has full-width LED taillights, as well as the “Honda” script instead of the traditional “H” logo.

As for the interior, at this point, you’re already probably familiar with how it looks. They’ve been teasing this hybrid coupe for the past two year,s after all. Basically, it has a well-appointed and premium dash with nice materials and plenty of tech. Most vehicle functions can already be accessed through the 10.25-inch fully-digital gauges, while providing entertainment and connectivity is its main 9-inch touchscreen with Google Built-In. This is also complemented by an 8-speaker Bose sound system.

Of course, the entire Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety systems is standard, and this includes stuff like Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Keeping Assist System, and Blind Spot Information System, among others.

The 2026 Honda Prelude will reach Japanese dealers tomorrow, with an equivalent Philippine price of around P2.4 million. In Japan, there’s a Honda ON limited edition model, which is characterized by its black roof and a few unique interior trimmings. With the Prelude now on sale in Japan, do you wish for Honda Cars Philippines to bring in the Prelude? We know someone who’d definitely be happy to own one.
