Under The Spotlight (2014 MIAS) Subaru Holds ASEAN Premiere Of WRX and WRX STI In The Philippines

Motor Image Pilipinas, the official distributor of Subaru in the Philippines, held their ASEAN premiere of the Subaru WRX and WRX STI in the Philippines, a first for the Philippines in recent history.

With deliveries starting in May, the new WRX and WRX STI promises to be a better sports sedan, with improvements in both handling and performance. Improvements such as Active Torque Vectoring, which shuffles power in each wheel and brakes the inner wheel when cornering in order to have optimum traction, and Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control which allows the driver to set the car’s suspension, throttle response, and other vehicle settings to suit their needs. In pursuit of better fuel economy, a new electric power steering promises better fuel economy and better steering feel.

The Subaru WRX receives a new powerplant. Replacing the 2.5 liter boxer unit is the company’s new DIT (Direct Injection Turbo) 2.0 liter 4 cylinder boxer engine, producing 268 hp @ 5600 rpm and 350 Nm of torque @ 2500 – 5200 rpm. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is done in just over 5 seconds. For the first time ever, the WRX is offered with Subaru’s Lineatronic CVT, which is modified to handle the 2.0 liter DIT’s power and torque. The CVT is the sole transmission option of the WRX in the Philippines.

The Subaru WRX STI does not receive any engine choices, meaning, the same 2.5 liter 4 cylinder boxer engine that powered its predecessor remains, producing 305 hp @ 6000 rpm and 407 Nm of torque @ 4000 rpm. Features exclusive to the WRX STI include a faster steering response, which Subaru claims is faster than the electronic power steering of the Porsche 911, a Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and a Brembo® Performance Brake System with Super Sport ABS. Larger, 245/40 R18 wheels also provide better grip to the WRX STI. The sole transmission option for the WRX STI is a 6-speed manual transmission.
