Mercedes-Benz Philippines was supposed to launch the all-new GLS full-size luxury SUV this week. However, due to the threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this was inevitably canceled. At least nothing’s stopping you from looking at the German automaker’s latest opulent offering from the comfort of your own homes. With seven seats, along with the flagship comfort of the S-Class full-size sedan, the Mercedes-Benz GLS offers nothing but pure luxury for the whole family.
From the outside, the GLS flaunts a sporty set of aggressive bumpers all around, along with five twin-spoke 21-inch alloy wheels. This is because the variant on offer is the sporty AMG Line. Up front, the flagship SUV features a wide grille with two slats, which are flanked by a pair of Multibeam LED headlights with LED daytime running lights. The side profile has fewer character lines than its predecessor, which is in line with the German automaker’s new design language that focuses on the overall shape of the vehicle to deliver a cleaner look. Lastly, the rear fascia has a chrome bar running across the SUV’s width, connecting the two LED taillights.
Inside, the GLS features a similar design with the Mercedes-Benz GLE, with the highlight being those two 12.3-inch displays for the MBUX infotainment system with an intelligent personal assistant along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless charging capabilities. Occupants will also enjoy the Burmester 3D Surround Sound system, while first and second-row occupants are treated to power-adjustable seats. The larger dimensions translate to increased interior space. Mercedes-Benz claims that adults as tall as 6’4″ can fit in the third-row seats. Moreover, all three rows benefit from a plethora of USB-C charging ports along with a 5-zone automatic climate control package that emits perfume for a relaxing interior atmosphere.
Safety and driver convenience is also a huge priority for the GLE, being fitted with an advanced form of automatic emergency braking (marketed as Active Brake Assist), lane tracing and keeping assist, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention monitor, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, among other features.
As mentioned, only one variant will be offered, and this is the GLS 350d 4MATIC AMG Line. As such, it is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-6 turbo diesel engine that produces 286 hp and 600 Nm of torque, with power sent through all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLS is now on sale for P8,990,000 for the sole GLS 350d 4MATIC AMG Line. Now, you may be tempted to give this plush SUV a look, but as of this writing, Mercedes-Benz dealers (along with all other dealers) are closed to support the government’s enhanced community quarantine efforts.
