Kia PH Says At Least 2 New Cars Are Coming, 2 More In Consideration

Kia Philippines will launch at least two new cars along with plans for two more in a bid to achieve triple-digit growth.

Kia Philippines has just announced during its media round table that the brand is launching at least two new cars this year along with the chance of two additional new cars. This goes in line with our previous article about Ayala’s AC Motors’ plans for this year, wherein the group will launch a total of six new cars this year.

Based on our initial predictions, we think that these two new cars could most likely be the all-new Kia Sorento three-row crossover SUV and the all-new Kia Carnival three-row MPV. Filipinos love anything that’s quite large and is able to carry the extended family, which makes these two cars highly viable in our market. Both vehicles are available globally with the Hyundai Motor Group’s tried-and-tested 2.2-liter inline-4 turbo diesel that produces 200 hp and 441 Nm of torque. Expect these engines to be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Other markets receive a 2.4-liter naturally-aspirated inline-4 gasoline engine, a 3.3-liter V6 naturally-aspirated gasoline engine, or a smaller 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo diesel engine.

What we’re highly curious about are the two additional cars that the South Korean automaker is planning to launch this year. Globally, Kia unveiled a plethora of all-new or updated models recently. These include the all-new K5 midsize executive sedan and the updated Kia Picanto and Rio hatchbacks. Kia also updated its premium sports sedan, the Stinger. Though at its current state, the Stinger is more of a niche halo car for the Kia brand in the Philippine market.

Kia’s plans to launch new cars this year is in line with the brand’s goal of aiming for a triple-digit growth this year. Basically, the company is aiming to once again achieve its sales number in 2019. Unfortunately, the threat of DTI’s safeguard measures is real, and Kia’s growth will also be dependent on how these added tariffs on imported cars will impact its projections for 2021.
