The all-new 2021 BMW 4 Series is finally here in the Philippines after a lengthy social media teaser campaign. BMW’s latest two-door offering is now more distinct than ever from the 3 Series sedan with which it shares its platform. In doing so, BMW has not only placed driving pleasure at the core of the 4 Series, but also a design that’s more distinct than ever from its more practical sibling.
Of course, we definitely have to talk about its exterior design. The all-new 2021 BMW 4 Series is the first BMW to feature the German luxury automaker’s new, tall kidney grille design that’s been a point of contention for a number of people. One thing’s for sure though, it did make the 4 Series look much more than just a two-door version of the 3 Series. Unlike recent BMWs, the 4 Series features fewer character lines, giving it a cleaner and smoother side profile. The roofline has been made smoother and lower than the 3 Series, making it look sportier and sleeker. At the back, the signature L-shaped LED taillights now have a dark tint outside the red LEDs.
Two variants will be offered in the Philippines market, a 420i Model Advantage and 420i M Sport. The base 420i Model Advantage gets 18-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights and taillights, and satin silver window lining. Upgrading to the 420i M Sport adds sportier front and rear bumpers, 19-inch alloy wheels, black window lining and an M rear spoiler.
Unsurprisingly, the interior of the 4 Series is very similar to the 3 Series, though this sportier two-door coupe offers slightly better interior materials and features. For instance, all 4 Series variants come with BMW’s latest iDrive 7 infotainment system, which remains to be our most favorite infotainment system in the industry. iDrive 7 can be controlled via the 8.8-inch touch screen or the famed iDrive controller knob. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also offered as standard, along with power-adjustable front seats with memory settings for the driver, ambient LED lighting and an automated trunk. Stepping up to the 420i M Sport adds an M Sport steering wheel, M Sport seatbelts, paddle shifters, Vernasca Leather seats (Sensatec Leather for the 420i Model Advantage), and Aluminum Tetragon interior trims.
Based on the 420i moniker, the 4 Series only comes with one engine choice, a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque, with power being sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 420i has a zero to 100 kph is achieved in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 240 kph.
More than just for better aesthetics, opting the 420i M Sport also adds a number of chassis and handling upgrades over the 420i Model Advantage. These upgrades include an M Sport suspension, which lowers the ride height by 10 mm, along with Variable Sports Steering, which adjusts the steering ratio depending on your speed. This steering is able to cater to both high-speed stability and low-speed agility, especially when you’re taking the 4 Series through a set of twisty roads.
The all-new BMW 420i Model Advantage is priced at P3,990,000 and is available in the following colors: Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Bluestone Metallic, and the following optional colors: Jet Black, Arctic Race Blue, Alpine White, Sunset Orange, and Sanremo Green. The BMW 420i M Sport variant is priced at P4,590,000 and will be offered in Alpine White, Arctic Race Blue, Black Sapphire, and will have Mineral White, M Portimao Blue, and Sanremo Green as optional choices. As with all new BMWs, the all-new BMW 4 Series comes with a 5-year or 200,000-kilometer manufacturer’s warranty – a new standard in the premium automotive segment in the Philippines.
