It seems Toyota has been rapidly expanding its GR Sport lineup recently. What we’re seeing this time is the 2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport, which made its ASEAN debut in Thailand and gives this pickup a number of tasteful aesthetic and handling upgrades.
From the outside, the 2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport gets rid of its grey wheel arches and trims in favor of body-colored ones. The grille is also new, and it spells out the name “TOYOTA” rather than displaying the usual Toyota emblem. There are also gloss black highlights on the fender flares and side mirrors, along with GR badges on the grille, front doors, and tailgate.
As for the interior, the Hilux GR Sport features sporty suede and leather sport seats with red highlights and embossed GR logos on the headrests, a new steering wheel with red stitching and a red center line, aluminum sport pedals, and a new color multi-information display with a GR start up animation.
Powering the new 2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport is the same 2.8-liter inline-4 turbo diesel engine as the standard Hilux, which means it still produces 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque. This is sent through a 4WD system via a 6-speed automatic.
Thankfully, the Hilux GR Sport isn’t just an aesthetic upgrade. Toyota gave this sportier Hilux new monotube shock absorbers for improved handling. On the other hand, braking performance has also been improved thanks to the new ventilated front discs with red brake calipers.
The 2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport is now on sale in Thailand, and given how the Japanese automaker is aggressively promoting its GR brand in the Philippines, the new Hilux GR Sport will most likely be offered in our market as well.
