Sony and Honda recently announced that they have signed a joint venture agreement to establish a new company that will be engaged in the development and sale of electric vehicles (EVs) as well as in providing services for mobility. Sony is no stranger to the electric vehicle space. While they have not yet released a production car, they’ve already got two near-production prototypes in the form of the Vision-S 01 and Vision-S 02 concepts (as shown in the lead photo).
The new company will aim to bring together Honda’s cutting-edge environmental and safety technologies, mobility development capabilities, vehicle body manufacturing technology, and aftersales service management experience, with Sony’s expertise in the development and application of imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network, and entertainment technologies. The result of the two companies’ strengths will be the creation of electric vehicles unlike we’ve seen before in the automotive industry.
Sony and Honda plan to establish a new company within 2022, which will be called Sony Honda Mobility, Inc. The company will be a 50-50 joint venture between Honda and Sony, and the newly-formed company aims to begin the sale of EVs and provision of services for mobility in 2025. The establishment of the new company and the start of business are subject to relevant regulatory approvals in Japan.
