As the 8th Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) draws closer, which is set to open on September 15, automakers participating in the show are beginning to send exclusive media invites to their booths. One of them is the newly-relaunched Hyundai Motor Philippines (HMPH), and their invite is a very peculiar one. That’s because it showcases the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover SUV. Does this mean that it will make an appearance at PIMS?
We’re certainly confident to say that this will be the case. That’s because back when the brand was relaunched last August 17, they announced that the Ioniq 5 is headed to the Philippines. They also announced that it’ll make its first public appearance at PIMS, though it will only be a preview. It won’t go on sale yet, but with a lot of automakers locally now offering electric vehicles (EVs), it’s only a matter of time before the Ioniq 5 will eventually be sold to the public.
As a recap, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the brand’s first EV to ride on the E-GMP platform that was developed exclusively for electric cars. The retro styling of this crossover SUV not only looks futuristic but also gives priority to interior space. Thanks to a dedicated EV platform’s skateboard architecture, engineers are able to push the wheels as far out of the body as possible, thus giving this compact crossover the same wheelbase as the much larger Palisade.
The interior is likewise very futuristic, and thanks to its very long wheelbase, there’s plenty of space for all occupants. Local specs have not yet been confirmed, but the Ioniq 5 comes with stuff like full LED exterior lighting, flushed pop-out door handles, two 12-inch touch screens, as well as an interior that’s made out of sustainable materials.
The Ioniq 5 has two battery sizes–58 kWh and 72.6 kWh (a 77.4 kWh size is exclusive to North America), along with horsepower figures ranging from as low as 168 hp to as much as 302 hp. Single or dual-motor layouts are available, and the quoted range will vary depending on your battery and drivetrain combination. This can range from 384 km or 460 km under the WLTP testing cycles.
Apart from the upcoming PIMS, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 will also be previewed at the Electric Vehicle Summit this coming October. In addition, the South Korean automaker also said during the brand’s relaunch that the facelifted Palisade and Stargazer entry-level MPV are also on their way to the Philippines.
