Toyota Goes Big With 2024 Grand Highlander, Has Up To 362 HP

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is really big and also really fast if you splurge for the 362-horsepower Hybrid Max model.

Though Toyota does not sell the Highlander in the Philippines, local interest in this car is somewhat high. After all, midsize three-row crossover SUVs sell in good numbers here. That also means that this 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander probably won’t be sold in the Philippines anytime soon, and it’s probably for the better.

Still categorized as a midsize crossover SUV, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander measures 5,116 mm long, 1,989 mm wide, 1,781 mm tall, and with a wheelbase of 2,946 mm, making this the biggest crossover SUV that Toyota makes. It’s nearly as big as the full-size Sequoia, but not big enough to be classified as a full-size vehicle. It also rides on the same TNGA-K that’s utilized by other Toyota and Lexus cars like the Camry, RAV4, RX, and NX.

From a design perspective, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander diverges away from the curvaceous lines of its smaller sibling, going instead for a boxier and more angular route similar to the Sequoia. In fact, it looks very similar to its aforementioned truck-based sibling. Toyota also designed the Grand Highlander’s body to feature minimal lines–emphasizing its boxy and rugged looks. Depending on the variant, wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches. Further proof of its American-centric aesthetic is the vehicle’s development roots, with its design being the work of Calty Design Studios in California.

Inside the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, you’ll be greeted with an interior that’s extremely spacious. It’s the exact reason why someone would pick the Grand Highlander over its smaller sibling. In fact, the Grand Highlander claims to genuinely accommodate three full-size adults in its third row, while the cargo area behind the third row can even fit up to seven carry-on luggage.

The overall design is still very similar to the standard Highlander, but there are added design flourishes with the new center console and dash to add more visual interest. Bronze accents on higher trims also give the interior a bit of character, while the center armrest for the front passengers were designed to feel as soft as a sofa.

As for interior features, lower variants come with a 7-inch partly-digital instrument cluster, while higher variants come with a 12.3-inch fully-digital instrumentation. A 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system is offered as standard on all grades, along with leather seats, power-adjustable front seats, powered tailgate, along with the option for either a second-row bench seat or individual captain’s chairs. Other interior features available on higher variants include an 11-speaker JBL sound system, a foot sensor for the powered tailgate, and a 1,500-watt power outlet, just to name a few.

Three powertrain options are available for the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, and all of them are four-cylinder engines. The entry-level choices are either a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain. Horsepower figures for the former two have not yet been revealed, but we already know the details of the third powertrain option. This would be the Hybrid Max powertrain that combines the 2.4-liter turbo with three electric motors. This powertrain is used in the Crown and the RX 500h F Sport Performance, but here in the Grand Highlander, it’s been tuned to produce 362 horsepower.

With the Hybrid Max, the Grand Highlander has the ability to scoot from 0-60 mph (96 kph) in just 6.3 seconds, which is very impressive for such a large SUV. This powertrain is mated to a 6-speed automatic and comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The other two engines have AWD just as an optional extra.

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander will be made in the United States solely for the North American market. Pricing for this ginormous SUV will be announced in the summer of 2023 (around June to September).
