Remember the MG Cyberster Concept? The Sino-British automaker has finally unveiled it in production form. Announced today at the ongoing Shanghai Motor Show, the MG Cyberster is the brand’s take on the classic roadster in the electric vehicle (EV) age.
Measuring 4,535 mm long, 1,913 mm wide, and 1,329 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,690 mm, the MG Cyberster is a bit bigger than the BMW Z4, but a lot smaller than a Ford Mustang. It’s also way bigger than the Mazda MX-5, and at 1,850 kg, it’s also heavier, though, for an electric roadster hauling a big battery, its weight is not too heavy as it’s nearly on par with a Jaguar F-Type.
As expected, the design of the MG Cyberster has been toned down a bit compared to the concept that previewed it, but it still looks very futuristic and incredibly sporty. The roadster even comes with Lamborghini-style scissor doors, while the sculpted front and rear bumpers give this car plenty of presence. 20-inch wheels and a futuristic set of LED lighting all add up to a roadster that looks very distinct.
At the back, the MG Cyberster has what the brand calls its “Kammback” tail, which is characterized by its striking set of LED taillights that spread across the roadster’s width. 20-inch alloy wheels sit nicely inside the wheel wells, while the traditional soft top gives this vehicle a very elegant side profile.
Unfortunately, the brand has not revealed a lot of interior images, but based on the top view of the MG Cyberster, we can see a very sculpted and cocooned interior with a curved digital gauge cluster and capacitive touch controls in lieu of physical knobs and buttons. The red interior also seems to be made with plush materials.
That’s about the details that MG has revealed so far because we still don’t know its powertrain except for the fact that the base single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant will produce 310 hp while the top-of-the-range model will produce 536 horsepower through a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) layout. The lithium-ion battery pack will be made by MG’s parent company SAIC.
The MG Cyberster will be sold outside China as it will also reach European markets by 2024. A local launch is very unlikely, but it could serve as a marketing tool and a halo car for MG in the Philippines to boost the brand’s appeal.
