AC Motors, the distributor of Volkswagen in the Philippines has revealed that the Tharu subcompact crossover SUV has arrived in the country already. The 2024 Volkswagen Tharu is the German automaker’s answer to the likes of the new Ford Territory, and based from the photos the company has sent, these are the stuff we know so far.
Volkswagen Philippines has confirmed that the Tharu will be sold in two variants: SE (shown in Mangan Grey and Petroleum Blue) and SEL (shown in Pure White and Polytech Blue). Though they did not reveal the specs, we can do a bit of deciphering based on these photos. Both variants come with 18-inch wheels, but the SEL comes with sportier ones that feature red highlights. LED headlights and taillights also come as standard, but the SEL models come with J-shaped LED daytime running lights as opposed to the straight ones in the SE.
The presence of a windshield-mounted forward-facing camera in the SEL models also suggests that it will come with a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) as well. A reverse camera will no doubt be offered, and so far these are only what we can decipher from these photos of the Tharu.
Powertrain specs are also unknown at this point, but based on the 300 TSI badge, a quick research on Volkswagen’s specs in China reveals that this version will come with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. This drives the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The 2024 Volkswagen Tharu will be officially launched on September 29 at the Karrera Café in Filinvest City, Alabang, Muntinlupa City. The public display and test drive of the two available variants—the SE and top-of-the-line SEL will be on September 30 and October 1. The Tharu will come in sophisticated colors such as Pure White, Mangan Grey, Petroleum Blue, and Polytech Blue.
