After announcing its impending arrival at the CX-60 launch last June, Mazda Philippines has now officially brought in the flagship of its range, the 2024 Mazda CX-90. Just like the CX-60, the CX-90 is part of Mazda’s premium rear-wheel drive Large Product Group platform of its Skyactiv Scalable Architecture. Thus, this three-row premium SUV aims to compete with the likes of the Volvo XC90, Lexus RX, and BMW X5, but at price points that are equivalent to other mainstream three-row SUVs such as the Hyundai Palisade, Subaru Evoltis, and the upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (Prad0).

From a styling perspective, the CX-90 continues on the brand’s evolved Kodo design language. Therefore, the CX-90’s sheet metal is characterized by a lack of character lines–focusing instead on smooth surfaces for its interplay of light and shadow. The front end has that signature five-point Mazda grille that’s flanked by adaptive matrix LED headlights with daytime running lights that pierce through the grille’s brightwork. Equally striking slim LED taillights cut nearly through the middle of the tailgate to create a distinct identity at night.
Two variants of the CX-90 will be sold: AWD and AWD Exclusive. All variants have similar exterior features, such as 20-inch wheels, full LED lighting, and a hands-free powered tailgate, just to name a few. Where the two variants differ is in their exterior treatments. The base AWD has unpainted body cladding, silver wheels, and less chrome trimming, while the AWD Exclusive comes with body-colored body cladding, two-tone wheels, and an increased amount of chrome trims.

Inside, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 once again punches above its weight class in terms of luxury by offering top-notch materials and plenty of standard equipment. Those at the front are greeted to power-adjustable front seats with heating and cooling, a 12.3-inch Mazda Connect infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charging, while the driver is treated to a 12.3-inch(?) fully digital instrument cluster, a 10.4-inch head-up display as well as a Driver Personalization System with facial recognition to save his preferred driving position and link it to his face to the system.
Those at the back are likewise treated to luxury with the Bose surround sound system, their own third-zone climate control, two USB-C charging ports, a panoramic sunroof, window shades, and subtle white ambient LED lighting. Stepping up to the AWD Exclusive ditches those bench-style second-row seats in favor of two individual captain’s chairs with heating and cooling as well as a fixed center console in the middle. The interior materials also differ between the two variants, with the AWD coming with black Nappa Leather and silver interior trims, while the AWD Exclusive gets brown Nappa Leather with Leganu suede upholstery along with gunmetal accents.
Interestingly, the third row of the CX-90 also differs depending on the variant, though the dimensions and amenities are the same. All variants come with two USB-C charging ports, their own climate vents, as well as seating for three in the AWD and seating for just two in the AWD Exclusive.
As with all other cars in the Large Product Group, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 comes with a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-6 gasoline engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque. This is sent through a rear-biased all-wheel drive (AWD) system via a Mazda-developed eight-speed automatic with a multi-plate clutch as opposed to a torque converter. The powertrain is tied to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that is located at the transmission itself.
As expected, the flagship 2024 Mazda CX-90 has the full i-Activsense suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, ranging from Front and Rear Smart City Brake Support, Blind Spot Warning, Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Cruising Traffic Support, though this one deactivates at 30 kph and does not work in stop-and-go traffic. These are on top of the usual plethora of sensors as well as a 360-degree camera system.
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the new flagship of the brand globally and in the Philippines, representing a leap towards Mazda becoming more of a premium brand.
