Hyundai Motor Philippines (HMPH) has perhaps one of the most diverse ranges of MPVs or minivans (if you’re American) in the market right now. Still, that’s not stopping the South Korean automaker from bridging the huge price gap between the Stargazer and the Staria with the new Custin. Priced extremely closely to the Toyota Zenix, here’s why the 2024 Hyundai Custin might be the model to consider instead if you’re in the market for a premium MPV.
The 2024 Hyundai Custin shares the same platform as the Kia Carnival, which we adored so much based on our review. However, the dimensions of the Custin are a bit smaller, though with a length of 4,950 mm, a width of 1,850 mm, and a height of 1,734 mm, it’s still not what you’d consider as small. In fact, it’s significantly longer and marginally wider than the Zenix.
Subjectively speaking, the Custin is also the nicer car to look at. Thanks to its longer but lower dimensions, this vehicle looks sleeker and better proportioned than the Zenix. It also certainly helps that it’s a stylish vehicle, utilizing Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness design language that the Tucson and Sonata adopted. This is characterized by a parametric grille with hidden LED daytime running lights, separate LED headlight clusters, and full-width LED taillights at the back. 17-inch wheels are offered in the GLS, while bigger 18-inch wheels are fitted in the range-topping Premium.
Moving inside the Custin, and this is where you’ll see the even bigger advantages of this car over the Zenix. As standard, all models come with a digital instrument cluster that mixes a segment-type display and a color multi-information display, a massive 10.4-inch portrait touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, smart entry with push-button start, powered sliding door on the right side, second-row captain’s chairs, and leather upholstery.
Once you step up to the range-topping Premium, things get quite interesting, and here’s why it’s also the variant we recommend. For around P300,000 more, this variant now gives you powered sliding doors on both sides, a powered tailgate, and those captain’s chairs now come with power adjustment that lets you enter Relaxation Mode, just like in the Carnival SX variant. Oh, and we know how much you were dismayed when the Zenix Hybrid didn’t come with a panoramic sunroof, but the Custin has it in this variant.
Under the hood of the 2024 Hyundai Custin is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 170 horsepower and 253 Nm of torque. This is sent to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic.
Safety is also paramount when it comes to these vehicles, which is why it’s unsurprising that this comes with plenty of safety features as standard. There’s the usual airbags, reversing camera, and hill start assist just to name a few, but if you splurge for the range-topping Premium, the whole Hyundai SmartSense suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) is added, which includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Following Assist, High Beam Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Safe Exit Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross Collision Avoidance Assist, and a 360-degree camera system.
Pricing for the Custin starts at P1,770,000 for the base GLS, while the range-topping Premium that we recommend is priced at P2,080,000.
