A few days ago, Mazda Motor Corporation announced the discontinuation of the Mazda 6 midsize executive sedan and wagon. However, this is only for the Japanese market, as allocation for the Philippines will remain unaffected.
Unsurprisingly, the Mazda 6, along with a crop of midsize executive sedans and wagons, have been affected by the rise in popularity of SUVs and crossovers. Apart from the Mazda 6, the Toyota Camry was also recently discontinued for the Japanese market, though it will remain on sale (and even got a new generation model) in global markets. In 2021, Mazda also discontinued the Mazda 6 for the North American market, likewise due to the shift towards crossovers and SUVs.
It is, however, noteworthy that the Mazda 6 was popular in the Japanese market. Kazuyoshi Todo, Executive Officer In Charge of Domestic Sales, said, “Successive Atenzas (its former name in Japan) and Mazda 6s have been loved by many customers for a long time, with a cumulative total of 226,437 units sold in Japan. The CX series of wagons will take over this role, and we will continue to deliver a lively experience to our customers through driving pleasure that is in tune with the times.”
When asked if this will affect Philippine allocation, Mazda Philippines released an official announcement:
“The Mazda 6 has always been exclusively manufactured in Japan for the Philippines. The recent announcement of the discontinuation of the Mazda 6 in Japan applies only to the Japanese market. In the Philippines, only the SportWagon body is offered, featuring the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition for the 2024 model year, available in both Artisan Red and Rhodium White. Mazda Japan has allocated 21 Mazda6 units for the 2023 production, with 13 of them already delivered to customers and the remaining in transit or in company and dealer stock.”
Launched last year in the Philippines, the 2024 Mazda 6 20th Anniversary Edition celebrates the 20th anniversary of the car’s nameplate in the global market. This special edition model comes with exclusive touches such as its commemorative 20th Anniversary badges placed on the front fenders, while the grille and 19-inch wheels are painted in high-gloss silver for a more luxurious appearance. Two colors are offered: Artisan Red and Rhodium White.
Inside, the 2024 Mazda 6 20th Anniversary Edition comes with a luxurious interior to match the premium exterior. Tan-colored Leganu synthetic suede and Nappa leather upholstery wrap the seats and door panels, while stitching can be seen on the dash, and the headrests feature the 20th Anniversary logo. The special edition Mazda 6 retails for P2,200,000.
