Next-Generation 2024 Porsche Macan Goes Electric With Up To 630 HP

The 2024 Porsche Macan has finally made its debut, showcasing the German brand's second pure electric vehicle in its stable.

The new generation 2024 Porsche Macan has finally been revealed, showcasing the German sports car manufacturer’s best foot forward in the electric vehicle (EV) age. That’s because the Macan will be the first Porsche in its model range to make a generational transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) power to EV and the second in its range to be developed from the ground up as an EV after the Taycan.

Familiar But Sleeker Styling

But in its transition into an EV, the 2024 Porsche Macan doesn’t look radically different from the ICE-powered model it’s set to replace. Porsche, after all, is known to give their cars an evolutionary redesign. The new Macan’s design is sleeker and more coupe-like, which has resulted in a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd, down from 0.35 from the ICE-powered Macan. Apart from the sleeker shape, Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) also plays a role in the Macan’s improved aero, and this includes clever stuff like the extending rear spoiler, and active cooling flaps, just to name a few. Porsche also made the Macan’s underbody flat and enclosed, while innovations like flexible fairings ensure low air resistance when rebounding.

Because it’s an EV, it doesn’t have the usual ventilation that a car with an ICE drivetrain would need, resulting in a cleaner look. It is also worth talking about the white Macan Turbo in these photos. As the sportiest variant of the Macan range, the Turbo model gets a sportier front and rear bumper, bigger wheels, and a slightly lower stance.

A Driver-Centric But Tech-Laden Interior

As for the interior, the 2024 Porsche Macan likewise doesn’t stray away from the brand’s usual aesthetic. If you’ve seen the facelifted Cayenne’s interior, simply scale it down a bit, and alter a few design bits and you’re pretty much right on the money. It’s no bad thing though since as typical of Porsche, the interior is extremely well-built with premium materials. However, for the new Macan, there’s a high proportion of sustainable materials used throughout the interior.

Tech also plays a major role in the 2024 Porsche Macan, as this comes with up to three displays (two as standard). A 12.3-inch curved digital gauge cluster works in tandem with the main 10.9-inch Porsche Communication Management infotainment system. This operating system is based on Google’s Android Automotive, and it comes with a personal voice assistant that can be summoned by saying “Hey, Porsche!”. An optional 10.9-inch passenger’s side display is also offered, and this comes with a coating that prevents the driver from seeing the display. Finally, the Macan also debuts Porsche’s first implementation of an augmented reality head-up display.

Old Name, New Tricks

The new Macan is also the first model to ride on the company’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture which the upcoming Audi Q6 will also utilize. The bespoke EV platform enables packaging advantages that take advantage of the removal of the ICE drivetrain. Thanks to, the PPE architecture, the aerodynamic improvements, and the 100 kWh (95 kWh usable) lithium-ion battery, the Macan delivers a WLTP claimed range of up to 613 kilometers.

Even if it has such a long range, fast charging still plays a huge role in the Macan’s breadth of capabilities. Like the Taycan, PPE comes with an 800-volt architecture. However, unlike most 800-volt systems, Porsche has a clever trick up its sleeve. The DC charging capacity for the new Macan EV is up to 270 kW, but the battery can be increased from 10 to 80 percent in less than 22 minutes even at 400-volt charging stations. How? This has been made possible thanks to a high-voltage switch in the battery that enables bank charging.

What this means is that the 800-volt battery is split into two 400-volt batteries, which, according to Porsche, enables efficient charging without an additional high-voltage booster, at up to 150 kW. Finally, as for AC charging, the Macan EV can accept up to 11 kW, though this is much lower than the 22 kW AC that cars like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can accept.

Two Versions, All Blisteringly Quick

Two versions of the 2024 Porsche Macan will be initially sold: the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo. Both are dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) and both already deliver massive power. The Macan 4 offers 402 horsepower and 648 Nm of torque, which is enough for a 0-100 kph time of just 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 220 kph. The range-topping Macan Turbo is the pick of the range of 402 horses still isn’t enough for you. That’s because this model produces 630 horsepower and a whopping 1,128 Nm of torque, which is enough for a 3.3-second 0-100 kph time and a top speed of 260 kph.

Of course, as with every Porsche, you can expect top-notch driving dynamics out of this electric crossover. The two electric motors are controlled via the power electronics almost in real-time. The electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) operates around five times faster than a conventional AWD system and can respond to slip within 10 milliseconds. In addition, the all-wheel drive distribution is governed by the selected driving program. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), an electronically controlled differential lock on the rear axle, also contributes to the traction, driving stability, and lateral dynamics of the Macan Turbo.

Macan models with air suspension, which is equipped as standard on the Macan Turbo, are equipped with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) electronic damping control. This can also be combined with the steel-spring suspension as an option as well. PASM now also features dampers with two-valve technology, which, like in the Cayenne, the compression and rebound have their dedicated valves.

Lastly, the Macan has optional rear-axle steering, with a maximum steering angle of five degrees. This shortens the turning circle of the Macan when doing a u-turn, improves the agility of the Macan in bends, or increases stability when changing lanes at high speeds.
