The Honda Civic: How This Car Manages To Stay Relevant In 2024

Spanning eleven generations and more than five decades, the Honda Civic is still a relevant compact passenger car in 2024.

For the 2024 model year, the Honda Civic carries on mostly unchanged. It’s still the same 11th-generation car that first debuted in the Philippines near the end of 2021. And that’s the key point to take note here. The Civic spans eleven generations, which is a rare feat to achieve in the automotive industry. It’s a testament to just how good the nameplate has been for decades, which is why even as the automotive industry faces changing consumer preferences and environmental challenges, the Civic still manages to stand strong.

A Great Drive That Spans Generations

To understand the Civic in 2024, we have to look back to 1972, the year that the Civic was born. This means that the Civic nameplate is nearly 52 years old, so it’s no surprise that it has built such a solid reputation today. Initially known for its space efficiency due to its transverse front-wheel drive (FWD) layout, succeeding Civic generations increasingly gained a reputation for being sporty and performance-oriented.

That’s pretty much what the 11th-generation Civic has evolved into in 2024. The driving experience is singlehandedly the main draw of the Civic. Honda has surprisingly kept the FWD formula largely unchanged, but in the 10th generation (FC) Civic, a downsized turbocharged engine was introduced. This is when that sporty orientation was further emphasized because despite having a small 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder VTEC engine, it packed a lot of punch. At the same time, the 1.5-liter turbo engine improved its fuel economy compared to the previous selection of 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter non-turbo i-VTEC engines. It was the best of both worlds.

That powerful yet efficient engine is complemented by a vehicle that balances sportiness and everyday comfort extremely well. The current Civic has been given sharp steering, a more rigid body structure that quells vibrations and aids handling, and a well-tuned suspension that combines excellent body control with great handling. The CVT, on the other hand, while responsive and helps in delivering excellent fuel economy, holds the revs when accelerating hard. The RS variant comes with paddle shifters so this should make things more fun for the driver when more control is desired.

And let’s not even begin to talk about the Civic Type R. Recently redesigned from the ground up, the new FL5 generation Civic Type R builds upon the formula of the previous FK8, and then carefully refined to make the Type R the FWD hot hatch benchmark. It did not rewrite the FWD hot hatch rulebook, because the Type R is the rulebook. The improved engine manners, the more connected steering, and the electronic systems that change the personality of the Type R mean that even this hot hatch is a monster on track yet a docile and perfectly usable hatchback in daily driving situations.

Yet It’s A Vehicle That’s Well Thought Out

At the same time, the Honda Civic has been known for providing an interior layout that’s easy to use and flexible. This begins with the interior design, which for this generation, goes back to Honda’s roots of simplicity and usability. However, in this case, simplicity doesn’t mean boring. Thanks to the clever use of different textures and materials, the interior feels plush and well-built. Ditto the physical controls, which Honda has spent a lot of effort to make it feel tactile and satisfying to operate. There’s currently a war between automakers putting vehicle controls into the touch screen and customers insisting on physical controls, so it’s great that Honda knows how to make a user-friendly interior.

Tech also continues to play an ever-increasing role in the vehicle experience, which is why all variants of the Civic come with some form of digital instrumentation–with a 10.2-inch screen fitted in the RS and Type R. Likewise, a 7- or 9-inch screen with a Bose sound system on the latter is available, both with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Fitted as standard across all Civic models is Honda Sensing–a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), which is composed of the usual automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control (though no stop-and-go for the stick-shift Civic Type R for obvious reasons), as well as automatic high beams. This is complemented by the LaneWatch blind spot camera, while the Civic Type R gets radar-based blind spot warning with rear cross traffic alert. See, it’s also a vehicle that looks out for you.

A Vehicle With No Compromise

As you’ll probably notice, the overarching theme here is that the Civic manages to be multiple things all at once. And that’s perhaps key to its success. Oftentimes, achieving a certain trait means compromising on another, but the Civic throughout history has managed to blend multiple traits that made it so popular to both car enthusiasts and those who simply want a comfortable and fuss-free vehicle. It also certainly helps that the Civic is easy when it comes to maintenance and running costs because even the Civic Type R is fuel efficient (if you drive it sedately enough) that it manages to achieve anywhere from 7 to 15 km/l depending on the driving situation.

The ongoing challenge for the Civic, however, is the current market situation’s insatiable demand for crossovers and SUVs. The CR-V has slowly become Honda’s global best seller, overtaking even their own Civic. In the Philippines, it’s the BR-V, yet another crossover SUV, that has become the brand’s best-seller. Even then, the Civic continues to be a popular vehicle from a global perspective–especially in the United States where it continues to be one of the most popular passenger cars.

Yet despite changing preferences and an ever-growing shift towards electrification, the Civic remains to be a constant in the passenger car segment. Honda Cars Philippines recently announced in their media thanksgiving party that 2024 will be a year where we’ll be welcoming another electrified e:HEV hybrid model. Though no confirmation has been announced as to what model it will be, here’s to hoping that the Civic e:HEV will finally debut in the Philippines–signifying the next step in Honda’s electrification plans in the country.
