2025 Mazda EZ-6 Is China’s Electric RWD Mazda 6 Successor

The 2025 Mazda EZ-6 is the successor to the Mazda 6 in China. It is an electric RWD sedan that's exclusive to China, for now.

The Mazda 6 is officially no more after the 2024 model year. The midsize executive sedan that was once one of Mazda’s most popular models globally is facing extinction as the world continues to show its love for crossovers and SUVs. In China, however, sedans are still alive and extremely popular. At the same time, electric vehicles (EVs) are what’s popular in their market as well, which is what led Mazda to unveil the new 2025 Mazda EZ-6, an electric successor to the Mazda 6.

Let us tell you a secret, however. The 2025 Mazda EZ-6 isn’t developed solely by the Japanese automaker. It’s the result of a joint venture between Mazda and Changan. The EZ-6 uses a Changan-based EV architecture—specifically, the one that the Deepal SL03 and the S7 that we drove earlier this year also use. This means that it won’t just be a pure EV, but it will also come as a plug-in hybrid range extender EV.

Despite the Changan underpinnings, the 2025 Mazda EZ-6 looks very much like a sedan from the Hiroshima-based automaker. The EZ-6 comes with a new, fully enclosed grille that’s been designed with the brand’s signature wing shape. That grille is also surrounded by LED accent lighting, while the LED daytime running lights are separate from the main headlight cluster. It’s also proportioned in a way to have a long hood and a short rear deck—the typical proportions of Mazda’s Kodo design language. Finally, the rear end features a sloped roof and full-width LED taillights with circular graphics at each end.

Inside, the 2025 Mazda EZ-6 has a premium interior finished in premium materials. There are two screens—one for the driver and another main touchscreen for the infotainment system, both of which use a similar operating system as its Deepal counterpart. Despite the Deepal origins, the interior is typical Mazda in its overall aesthetic and especially through its color choices. Other features worth noting are power-adjustable front seats with both heating and ventilation and a powered fastback-style tailgate, just to name a few.

Mazda has not yet revealed the powertrain specifications of the EZ-6, apart from the fact that the electric version can travel as far as 600 kilometers while the plug-in hybrid range extender can travel up to 1,000 kilometers. It is rear-wheel drive (RWD) with the fully electric version having a 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. For reference, the Deepal SL03 in EV form has either a 58.9 kWh or 66.8 kWh battery pack, while electric motor choices vary from 215 horsepower and 320 Nm or 255 horsepower and 320 Nm.

The 2025 Mazda EZ-6 will hit Chinese showrooms this year. Do you think Mazda should sell the EZ-6 outside China? After all, trademark filings for a Mazda 6e name have recently surfaced.
