The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ, officially called the G580 with EQ Technology (such a long name, we know) has finally debuted today at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. For this article’s sake, we’ll refer to it as the G580 EQ because it’s such a long name to compose throughout this article. Anyway, the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ is the electric G-Class that the German luxury brand has been teasing for the longest time.

What isn’t going to be long here will be the explanation of the G580 EQ’s design. That’s because it’s what you expect an electric G-Class to be. It looks the same as the current G-Class, which recently got a mid-cycle facelift, but with its grille closed off and its front fascia gaining that black face that’s now a traditional design cue of the brand’s range of electric vehicles (EVs). The hood has been slightly reshaped to improve aerodynamics, though there’s only so much that a designer could do to make what is essentially a box have the aerodynamic properties of a bar of soap.

It’s pretty much the same story inside. Just like the facelifted G-Class, the G580 EQ has been updated with the MBUX infotainment system, along with numerous upholstery choices and even the option for a Burmester 3D surround sound system. There’s also a camera system that essentially makes the hood transparent, making off-road trekking with this big electric boy a lot easier.

The main highlight of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ is, of course, its electric drivetrain. Consisting of four electric motors with each one having its two-speed gearbox, the G580 EQ doesn’t need a traditional differential lock because the four electric motors can be individually controlled. At the same time, it comes with a shiftable low-ratio gearbox. The traction that the quad-motor setup provides is said to allow the G580 EQ to climb a 35-degree slope. Oh, and if you’re concerned about water wading, the completely sealed nature of an EV means it can wade through floods of up to 850 mm deep, 150 mm more than the gas-fed G-Class models.
Furthermore, the quad-motor setup also allows the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ to learn a few new tricks. such as a G-Turn, which is Mercedes’ branding for its tank-turn, letting the G580 EQ spin around on the spot. There’s also G-Steering, which lets the G-Class pivot around one wheel, while a crawl mode is essentially cruise control for off-roading, but at a speed that’s almost similar to walking.

As for those four electric motors, the G580 EQ has a total system output of 579 horsepower and 1,164 Nm of torque, which makes this box on wheels accelerate to 100 kph in just 4.7 seconds. Thanks to its 116 kWh battery pack, this large off-roader also has a WLTP-rated range of 470 kilometers. Those batteries can support up to 200 kW of DC fast charging, which is not as fast as what some EVs with 350 kW of DC charging can do these days, but fast enough for what most public DC fast chargers can only provide.
With the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ now revealed, do you wish for this electric off-roader to be sold in the Philippines?
