BYD seems to have made headlines fairly frequently in recent months, spearheaded by its heightened activities both globally and in the Philippines. The newest one focuses on the brand’s staggering sales performance. In 2023, BYD ended the year as the largest new energy vehicle (NEV, the collective term for electric and plug-in hybrid cars) brand globally and the 10th largest overall, while for this year, BYD is set to grow even further.

This latest news comes from CarNewsChina (via Yiche), which revealed that based on global sales data for July, BYD was the world’s third-best-selling brand, just behind sales leader Toyota and Volkswagen that’s in second place. BYD’s climb to third place is a staggering feat for the NEV brand, which only started selling cars in 2003 and then only making plug-in hybrids and pure electric cars since the 2020s. It was only BYD that managed to enter the top 5, heck even the top 10. Chery is in 18th, while Geely is in 20th.

So far, while China has been pumping out tons of new brands seemingly every month, only BYD has been able to crack into the top 10 global sales chart. It’s also one of the only few profitable automotive brands in China, which somewhat secures the brand’s future as it expands into more markets. Their affordable pricing, cutting-edge technologies, as well as their expertise in EV drivetrains, and their proprietary Blade LFP battery, have attracted a ton of customers looking for an affordable electrified car.
