The Toyota Vios may be the country’s best-selling vehicle and thus, the best-selling subcompact sedan. Therefore, it’s safe to expect that the best-selling subcompact sedan with a 1.5-liter engine last year is the Vios, right? Well, that couldn’t be any more wrong. Did you know that it’s actually the MG 5 that takes the lead? Yes, we’re just as surprised as you are, but there’s actually truth to this as verified by industry sales data.

You see, MG Philippines, which is now under the management of SAIC Motor Philippines, Inc. (a full subsidiary of SAIC Motor, MG’s parent company), had a record-breaking 2024. The Sino-British automaker ended the year in 9th place in industry sales with 9,016 units sold.
“Surpassing 9,000 units sold in a single year is a remarkable achievement for MG Motor Philippines,” said Mr. Felix Jiang, President of SAIC Motor (MG Motor) Philippines. “We are grateful to our customers, dealer partners, bank partners, and employees for their unwavering support. This success fuels our drive to deliver even more in 2025.”
The MG ZS and MG G50 Plus were the main drivers of this growth. The MG 5 sedan, however, grew significantly enough to become the best-selling model in the 1.5-liter sub-compact sedan segment with 3,415 units sold. While that puts the MG 5 in second place in the overall subcompact sedan category, it securely puts the Sino-British subcompact sedan as the leader among 1.5-liter subcompact sedans. Here’s how the sales numbers look.
Total Subcompact Segment
- Toyota Vios: 43,629 units
- MG 5: 3,415 units
- Honda City: 3,279 units
- Nissan Almera: 785 units
- Changan Alsvin: 180 units
1.5-Liter Subcompact Sedans
- MG 5: 3,415 units
- Honda City: 3,279 units
- Changan Alsvin: 180 units
- Toyota Vios: 139 units
- GAC GA4: 98 units
Now, you’re probably wondering why Toyota only managed to sell 139 units of the 1.5-liter Vios. Well, that’s because they discontinued the 1.5 G in the second half of 2024 and the sporty 1.5 GR-S last December. This basically makes the Vios a purely 1.3-liter affair this time around.

The Honda City in 2023 was the undisputed leader in the 1.5-liter subcompact sedan category, even with the 1.5 G and GR-S still on sale at the time, but even in 2024, the MG 5 has already outsold the venerable Honda City. Oh, how times have changed.
What’s interesting, however, is the fact that the Geely Emgrand is missing. That’s also a subcompact sedan competitor with a 1.5-liter engine. Whether the Emgrand has been placed in another category or whether Geely even sold any units last year or not is something we’ll have to still find out. For now, the MG 5 is the undisputed leader in the 1.5-liter subcompact sedan category.
And MG is not stopping there. MG Philippines is poised to build on this success in 2025 by introducing new models, more dealerships to open, and enhanced customer programs to elevate the MG ownership experience.
