Chinese automaker GWM has used the ongoing 2025 Auto Shanghai as the venue for the global launch of the new GWM Haval Xiaolong Max. It is a compact plug-in hybrid crossover that’s at a similar size and price category as the BYD Sealion 6, but as you’ll see here, it can pack a lot more punch.

That’s because the new Haval Xiaolong Max is one of the frontrunners of GWM’s new Hi4 dual-motor plug-in hybrid drivetrain. In the GWM Haval Xiaolong’s case, those dual electric motors (one on each axle) are augmented by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. All-in-all, the system produces a whopping 319 horsepower when all power sources are working together, which is good enough for a 0-100 kph time of just 6.8 seconds. Power is sent through a two-speed Direct Hybrid Transmission (DHT) that GWM has been using for its series-parallel hybrids for quite a while now.
Two lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery sizes are available for the GWM Haval Xiaolong Max. The base versions get an 18.74 kWh unit that’s good for 110 km of electric range, while range-topping versions get a 27.54 kWh that’s good for 165 km of pure electric range. With DC fast charging capabilities, the Haval Xiaolong Max can do a 30-80 percent charge in just 0.33 hours or 0.47 hours for the bigger battery.

As for its design, the GWM Haval Xiaolong Max carried a new identity for the brand. The sleek front end features a full-width LED light bar, which visually connects the two adaptive matrix LED headlights. The side profile is also very sleek, which is complemented by its all-black pillars that contribute to a more futuristic vibe.

Lastly, the rear end gets a slightly tapered roof line, and its sleek tailgate likewise mirrors the full-width LED lighting element at its front fascia. Speaking of which, the Haval logo on both ends of the vehicle is part of the illumination.

As for the interior, you’ll be greeted by plush and premium materials. Thankfully, unlike previous GWM models, there’s a lot of lovely matte textures and satin silver surfaces around the cabin, which will age better compared to the glossy black stuff. Tech, of course, plays a central role in the Haval Xiaolong Max’s interior, containing a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.6-inch main infotainment screen running GWM’s newest Coffee OS 3 operating system. Apple CarPlay comes as standard, while Android Auto will most likely be fitted to overseas models. Finally, drivers also get a large windshield-projected head-up display.
The GWM Haval Xiaolong Max also gets the new Coffee Pilot Plus suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Through the use of 12 ultrasonic radars and seven cameras, Coffee Pilot Plus goes beyond the usual automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane centering, since it also comes with stuff like remote control parking and traffic light recognition.
With the new GWM Haval Xiaolong Max already revealed, do you wish for GWM to offer this in the Philippines as a competitor to the BYD Sealion 6?
