Tesla is expanding the Model Y family by unveiling the new Model Y L. Addressing the need for a more affordable three-row electric SUV to sit below their more premium, Falcon-winged Model X, the Tesla Model Y L adds more practicality to the brand’s best-selling model.

Of course, the main highlight here is its six-seater capacity, which has been made possible by slightly reshaping the roofline to create a slightly less rakish rear profile. Adding a third row also meant increasing its length by 186 mm, resulting in the Model Y L having a total length of 4,976 mm. Its 1,920 mm width remains the same (not counting the mirrors), while its height has slightly increased by 44 mm to 1,668 mm.

Thanks to it being conceived as a pure electric vehicle (EV) from the get-go, the already spacious Model Y has become even more cavernous. The second-row passengers benefit from heated and cooled captain’s chairs with center armrests, whilst they enjoy their own rear entertainment through the 8-inch touchscreen display. The third-row occupants, meanwhile, benefit from seat heating.

As for the rest of the vehicle, the Tesla Model Y L remains largely unchanged, design-wise. The front part of the interior still features a minimalist dash with a full-width LED ambient light strip, as well as a large 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Outside, the altered proportions have somewhat made the Model Y L look a bit less sleek, while unique to the Model Y L are 19-inch wheels with a multi-spoke-like design for the aero covers.

In China, where the Tesla Model Y L will first go on sale, it is only offered with a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) layout that’s good for a 0-100 kph time of just 4.5 seconds, a 201 kph top speed, and a CLTC-rated range of 751 kilometers, a one kilometer improvement over the standard Model Y Long Range AWD. Take note, however, that China’s CLTC test cycles are ultra conservative, so expect WLTP-rated ranges to fall in the 600-kilometer mark, matching the two-row Model Y Long Range AWD.

It is still unknown if the Tesla Model Y L will be exported out of China, but there’s a high chance it will be a global model, especially since the Model X is already an aging electric SUV. The Model Y’s being its bestseller in the Philippines, catapulted the brand to 12th in the latest CAMPI sales data. In fact, they’ve already broken through the 1,500-unit mark in July. Adding the Model Y L to its local lineup, especially with the Filipino’s insatiable love for three-row SUVs, will undoubtedly boost its local appeal even more.
