Say hello to the 2026 BMW iX3, which is mechanically unrelated to the gas and plug-in hybrid X3, and is a result of BMW having the right electric vehicle (EV) strategy. Whereas its German luxury peers found difficulty in cracking the right EV strategy code, BMW’s EV sales have grown steadily. Furthermore, by not fully committing to dedicated EV platforms and instead creating EV versions of its gas-powered models, its investment costs aren’t that high. Combined with its robust EV sales, BMW has avoided the financial disaster of its peers when EV sales growth started to slow down.
As such, despite market challenges, including EV-centric China and its heavy shift towards its own EV brands in lieu of foreign-made models, BMW has remained in a robust position. So much so that now’s finally the time to release its first “Neue Klasse” EV that they’ve been teasing for a couple of years now. Based on the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, the iX3 inherits 90 percent of its design.
A Neue Era Of Exterior Design

Starting with the front, the iX3 debuts the new signature front end of every Neue Klasse EV moving forward. The front-end design harks back to the BMW 02 Series, which was initially dubbed the Neue Klasse back then. The new front end comes with a slimmer vertical kidney grille, which is surrounded by LED strips in place of chrome. These now form the signature LED daytime running light graphic of every Neue Klasse EV.
At the sides, the iX3 has clean lines, which is uncharacteristic of BMW, since their cars would often have a single bold crease encompassing their length. The signature Hofmeister kink, however, has been preserved. Flush door handles are also the order of the day. Finally, towards the rear end, you will see horizontal LED taillights with a recessed portion in the middle of the tailgate, mimicking its roof spoiler.
Reinvented Interior For The Neue Era

As for the interior, the 2026 BMW iX3 features the brand’s first implementation of its Panoramic iDrive. The main highlight is its pillar-to-pillar upper display, located at the base of the windshield. This works together with the main 17.9-inch touchscreen and an optional 3D head-up display. All of these tech features are powered by BMW’s new Operating System X, which is also a software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture that enables over-the-air (OTA) updates and thus, periodical new feature updates.

Unfortunately, the new Panoramic iDrive also reduces the physical control count even further. At least primary functions related to driving have been preserved, such as the gear selector, the hazard light button, and, of course, the stalks. There are also even more buttons on the steering wheel, and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant when you simply want a certain feature to quickly be accessed.
Finally, as for the interior itself, BMW has heavily invested in making the interior feel downright luxurious, premium, and well-built. Visually, at least, it looks far more premium than what they’ve attempted with the X3. Also, thanks to being in the Neue Klasse dedicated EV platform, its five-seater layout offers exceptional leg and headroom for all occupants. Occupants will also appreciate the available Harman Kardon surround sound system.
Sophisticated Neue Klasse EV Architecture

To say that BMW has done its homework with the iX3 is an understatement at this point. Amidst China’s EV dominance, the iX3 has all the cutting-edge ingredients to keep up with the best. It all begins with the so-called “Heart of Joy”, which is BMW’s central driving dynamics system, which interprets BMW’s 100 years of driving dynamics development into software code. This controls how the power is delivered through all four wheels, as well as how the stability and traction control work together to offer a sportier driving experience, or one that’s focused on comfort and relaxation.
The 2026 BMW iX3 also has an 800-volt architecture that enables up to 400 kW of DC fast charging. Though this isn’t as fast as BYD’s “Megawatt” 1,000 kW charging, this is still enough to make the iX3 one of the fastest-charging EVs. Though BMW has not yet revealed its battery size, the 400 kW charging is good for a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 21 minutes, while a 10-minute charge is already enough to add 370 km of range.

Speaking of which, with 805 kilometers of WLTP-rated range, the 2026 BMW iX3 is one of the longest-range EVs to ever come out of Germany. And yet, this is the range figure of the dual-motor iX3 50 xDrive. With 463 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque, this is enough to propel the iX3 from 0-100 kph in just 4.7 seconds. Just imagine the range capabilities of the upcoming rear-wheel drive (RWD) single-motor versions, which will undoubtedly be more efficient.
The Beginning Of BMW’s Neue Era

The 2026 BMW iX3, as mentioned, is just the start of its wave of Neue Klasse EVs, and they were right to unveil the iX3 first. As crossover SUVs are today’s best-selling vehicles, what better way to speed up the rollout of its Neue Klasse EVs on public roads than with the new iX3. What’s next after the iX3 is the i3, the electric 3 Series that was previewed by the Vision Neue Klasse concept.
For those looking forward to the iX3, production won’t begin until 2026, which means that a Philippine launch may happen later that year.
