2026 Porsche Cayenne EV Will Feature Wireless Charging

The upcoming Porsche Cayenne EV is set to feature wireless charging that's as fast as a Level 2 AC wired home wallbox charger.

Porsche has begun teasing the upcoming Cayenne EV as it expands its electric vehicle (EV) lineup. Apart from confirming that it will have up to 1,000 horsepower, depending on which trim you select, the 2026 Porsche Cayenne EV will also come with wireless charging capabilities.

This isn’t the first time that wireless charging has been offered in an electrified vehicle. The tech has already debuted in the 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance (a plug-in hybrid version of the G30 5 Series) and the McLaren Speedtail, a plug-in hybrid hypercar. Wireless charging has also been deployed on a very small scale in the aftermarket community, so it remains a very niche technology. This makes the Cayenne the first production EV to feature this charging technology.

“Ease of use, suitability for everyday use, and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility,” says Dr. Michael Steiner, Deputy Chairman and Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development. “We are proud that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient.”

As Fast As A Wired Level 2 Charger

The challenge with wireless charging, however, is that it is often slower than when using a traditional cable. Porsche, however, says that with 11 kW of AC output, along with 90 percent energy efficiency, its wireless charger pretty much matches the output of wired 11 kW AC home chargers.

The premise of creating the wireless charger is due to Porsche determining that 75 percent of EV charging takes place at home. It is also this reason why we don’t see EVs to be a hurdle when it comes to range, since being able to charge at home is one of the greatest conveniences of an EV.

How It Works

In order for the technology to work, the new 2026 Porsche Cayenne EV comes with the optional Porsche Wireless Charging pre-installation and Porsche Wireless vehicle plate. The receiver unit is located in the car’s underbody between the front wheels, and is protected from stone chips and weather.

Perhaps your question right now is, how do you accurately park your Cayenne EV on top of the wireless charging pad? Well, through the infotainment system’s cameras, you will be precisely guided to park the Cayenne EV’s receiver right on top of the wireless charging pad. Porsche has not yet revealed how long the wireless charging pad takes to charge the Cayenne EV’s battery, but as mentioned, with an 11 kW output and 90 percent efficiency, it’s practically going to be just as fast as today’s 11 kW AC home wallbox chargers.

The floor plate, which weighs 50 kilograms, is equipped with LTE and WLAN as standard, so that remote software updates and infrastructure support are also guaranteed. Porsche Wireless Charging will initially launch in Europe in 2026. Other markets worldwide will follow.

Will It Fry My Cat?

Good question. If your cat or does decides to hide under the Cayenne EV while wirelessly charging, the foreign object detection and motion detector immediately stops the charging process. This also works with metal objects, since these are essentially conductors of heat.

As such, the wireless charging pad is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, as all components are weather-sealed. Though the charging process will stop when an object or an animal goes on top of the charger, rain, snow, sand, or even leaves won’t stop the charging process. Even driving over the floor slab won’t cause any significant damage.

Electromagnetic radiation is limited to the underbody of the vehicle during charging. And if you’re squeamish about the idea of electromagnetic radiation,  TÜV Süd has confirmed the robustness of the system. In addition, the floor plate is CE and UL certified, meeting EU and US-wide requirements for safety and environmental protection.

About The Cayenne EV Itself

The prototype 2026 Porsche Cayenne EV has already made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, but it will also make an appearance at the upcoming  IAA Mobility in Munich, Germany. Its eye-catching wrap, however, has received an overhaul for the upcoming IAA show, as it now uses innovative fluorescent paint. As soon as electricity flows, a sort of light show and animation pattern can be created. Individual paint sections are deliberately left out and remain dark. Five colour tones, from blue to violet, can be controlled in a targeted manner.

As for its full reveal, Porsche says that we can expect to see the production Cayenne EV near the end of 2025.
