Nissan’s Product Offensive Starts With New X-Trail, Skyline, Xterra, Juke EV

The Nissan X-Trail, along with three other models, are set to debut in the coming years as they focus on profitability and growth.

To say that Nissan is at a crossroads is an understatement. With the Japanese automaker aiming to rise up from its financial turmoil, its long-term strategy called “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life” couldn’t come any sooner. The vision, according to Nissan, integrates mobility intelligence into everyday life through its focus on AI-Defined Vehicles (AIDV), offering a choice of electrification technologies to meet diverse customer and market needs.

But first, let’s talk about its current financial situation. The ongoing Re:Nissan plan is in its final stages, which should help the Japanese automaker become more financially stable and liquid. Thus, they are now focusing on releasing a string of new vehicles to drive momentum and growth.

Nissan’s approach to artificial intelligence (AI) through the Nissan AIDV combines AI Drive Technology and Nissan AI Partner Technology, which aims to improve driver-assistance technologies, along with the vehicle’s control and infotainment systems. The ever-increasing utilization of electric-dominant hybrid systems, such as Nissan’s e-Power series hybrid, easily makes the coexistence between AI-driven technologies and electrified drivetrains seamless.

Speaking of which, Nissan is also set to introduce a broader range of electrified drivetrains to meet different needs across markets. This will include a new hybrid drivetrain for body-on-frame vehicles, along with plug-in hybrid and range-extender hybrid drivetrains — some of which will be developed through partnerships. Most prominently, Nissan already has vehicles co-developed with Dongfeng, such as the N7 and Frontier.

To start its product offensive, Nissan is going to release a next-generation X-Trail. Now, this is an interesting development, since the Philippine market is going to get the X-Trail soon, and it is highly unlikely that it will be this next-generation model, considering this vehicle’s release date timing.

For now, only the exterior design of the Nissan X-Trail has been previewed. Interior images and even technical details of its e-Power series hybrid system remain under wraps. Still, there’s a lot to like about its exterior design, because the front end features a striking mesh grille, wherein the LED daytime running lights cleverly blend with the grille pattern. The main LED headlights also seamlessly blend with the grille, giving the new X-Trail a menacing design. The X-Trail is set to debut in markets such as Japan and North America near the end of 2026.

Up next is the Juke, which is now in its third generation as a pure electric vehicle (EV). The Juke will be sold alongside the second-generation e-Power model, and will be a European-market exclusive. This vehicle shares the same platform as the Renault Scenic E-Tech and Nissan Ariya, since Renault and Nissan are still in an alliance.

Like the new X-Trail, the Juke still has no final specifications yet, but they have already unveiled its full exterior design. Safe to say, the Juke has so many polygons and folds in its design that it pretty much looks like a concept car that has been signed off for production.

The two remaining vehicles have only been teased for now. These two models will serve as Nissan’s “Heartbeat” models, which are vehicles that are mostly for emotional value and innovation for the brand.

One of those models is a new Nissan Skyline sports sedan, which is sold in markets outside Japan as the Infiniti Q50. The teaser gives us a hint of its side profile, which features the retro Skyline logo on the rear fenders, along with its rear doors and circular quad-LED taillights.

An accompanying video teaser has also been presented, which showcases the front end of the Skyline sedan. It features vertical LED daytime running lights and a return of the classic “S” badge, which was last featured in the non-GT-R R34 Skyline.

Unfortunately, the Nissan Skyline sedan is exclusive to Japan, but there’s a high chance North America will get this vehicle as an Infiniti-badged model. What North America will also get is a revival of the Nissan Xterra, which is the brand’s second Heartbeat model. The Xterra has also been teased, featuring a bold front end with amber lights, along with a borderless front grille with the Nissan script stamped on its front fascia. This vehicle is said to feature a V6 and a V6 hybrid drivetrain for the North American market.

Nissan has not yet released a timeline for when the Skyline and Xterra will be released. The new Skyline and Xterra are also part of the brand’s product reshuffling, wherein its current global portfolio of 56 models will be streamlined to 45. It will eliminate low-performing models in favor of pouring its development costs into models that sell in higher numbers.
