Though it still feels like it’s fairly recent, the current G70 BMW 7 Series has been with us for a couple of years now. Time flies so fast, and unsurprisingly, cars evolved so quickly, too. The 2027 BMW 7 Series represents the mid-cycle facelift of the current generation model, and the Munich-based luxury automaker says that it’s the most comprehensive mid-cycle facelift they’ve ever done to any model to date.
It all begins with its exterior design. Though design is subjective, the 2027 BMW 7 Series, in my opinion, is a massive improvement. The large kidney grilles were controversial when they debuted in 2022, but now, I think they’ve finally integrated them extremely well into the full-size sedan’s design.
The more cohesive but still controversial design focuses on a monolithic design theme, where many of the previous model’s details are now better integrated into the design. For instance, while the illuminated grille is still large, it is now narrower and has the same height as the thinner LED daytime running lights. The main LED headlights are a lot smaller now, and they have been hidden away in the car’s vertical side air intakes. The resulting angular front end means there are more body-color sections at its front fascia. If you’ve ever seen brutalist architecture before, the new 7 Series, we think, is somewhat an interpretation of that in a luxury sedan format.
As for the rest of the vehicle’s design, the side profile remains largely unchanged, save for new wheel designs that peak at 22 inches in diameter. Opt for the Pure Excellence version, and you’ll have access to the BMW Individual two-tone paint scheme that takes 75 hours to finish. At the back, the new 7 Series gets wider LED taillights that are a few inches shy of turning into a full-width LED light bar. Finally, sportier M Sport and M Performance versions are also available, which are distinguished by their rectangular side air intakes and blacked-out sections on the lower parts of the bumper and side rocker panels.
Sit inside the 2027 BMW 7 Series, and you’ll indeed realize the automaker’s promise of giving this vehicle the most comprehensive mid-cycle facelift ever. The entire dash has been ripped off, as it now adopts the Panoramic iDrive that debuted in the Neue Klasse iX3 and i3 electric vehicles (EVs). This integrates the full-width Panoramic Vision display at the base of the windshield, along with a main 17.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and, as a first for its application, a third 14.6-inch passenger’s side display that’s fitted as standard.
Those who have the pleasure of riding shotgun will have access to video streaming and games. If the vehicle’s sensors detect that the driver is distracted by the screen, the passenger’s screen is automatically dimmed. In my opinion, though, the design implementation of this display looks like an afterthought, especially next to the flush screens of the MBUX Hyperscreen.
One of the highlights of the pre-facelift 7 Series was its optional rear-seat 31.3-inch Theatre Screen. For 2027, it has been updated with touchscreen functionality and the ability to conduct Zoom meetings through its integrated webcam. It also has an HDMI port for laptops and other devices. Audiophiles will appreciate the standard 18-speaker 575-watt Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, or if they still want more punch, they can splurge for the optional 36-speaker 1,925-watt version.
Considering the sheer updates made to its electronics, it is no surprise that the 2027 BMW 7 Series adopts a completely new electrical architecture from its Neue Klasse of EVs. Despite having 20 times more processing power than before, the electrical architecture saves 610 meters of cabling and 30 percent of wiring harness weight.
Continuing with BMW’s “The Power of Choice”, the new 7 Series still comes with an assortment of drivetrain options. For those who prefer an internal combustion engine (ICE), the range kicks off with the 740 xDrive and 740d xDrive. Both feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, with the former being gasoline-fed, while the latter drinks diesel. The gas-fed 740 produces 400 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque, while the diesel version produces 313 horsepower and 670 Nm of torque.
For those who prefer a plug-in hybrid, there’s the 750e xDrive and M760e xDrive. Both versions utilize a 3.0-liter turbo straight-six with a strong electric motor and an 18.7 kWh (usable) lithium-ion battery, but their power outputs differ. The 750e xDrive produces 489 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque, while the M760e xDrive produces 612 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. Both models charge at 11 kW in AC, and in terms of electric range, the 750e xDrive can travel in pure electric mode for up to 82 kilometers, while the M760e xDrive is slightly lower at 80 kilometers.
Finally, those who can make the full EV switch may be interested in the i7, which is available in a 455-horsepower i7 50 xDrive, a 544-horsepower i7 60 xDrive, and the potent 680-horsepower i7 M70 xDrive. Thanks to new cylindrical battery cells that are 20 percent more energy dense, which increases their usable capacity by around 10 percent. All three versions utilize a 112.5 kWh battery, which charges at up to 250 kW in DC. As for their ranges, the i7 50e xDrive can travel up to 728 kilometers, while the i7 60 xDrive takes a mere 1 kilometer penalty. The i7 M70 xDrive, being the most powerful, has the least range at 686 kilometers, but it’s still an impressive figure nonetheless.
The 2027 BMW 7 Series also debuts the brand’s new BMW Symbiotic Drive. This is an SAE Level 2 advanced driver-assistance suite of safety features, which is a step back from the previous goals of offering an SAE Level 3 system due to the complicated nature of regulations surrounding semi-autonomous driving features. This ADAS suite comes with AI, in order for the system to continually improve its capabilities.
Production of the new 2027 BMW 7 Series will commence on July 2026. Deliveries to markets like North America and Europe will begin in the latter part of the year, while a Philippine launch through SMC Asia Car Distributors Corporation will likely happen sometime in 2027.
