What You Need To Know As Kia PH Launches Sportage Hybrid Soon

The 2027 Kia Sportage is arriving in the Philippines this year, and here are our initial thoughts on this electrified crossover SUV.

Kia Philippines is set to expand its lineup with the addition of the Sportage Hybrid. As we experienced the 2027 Kia Sportage Hybrid, here’s what you need to know about this compact crossover SUV as it takes on the likes of the all-hybrid Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V Hybrid, and even its Hyundai sibling, the Tucson Hybrid.

Speaking of its Hyundai sibling, as part of the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), the Kia Sportage shares the same platform as the Tucson. However, based on styling alone, you wouldn’t be able to tell that the two vehicles are mechanical twins. HMG always does a good job separating its Hyundai and Kia corporate cousins, and in the case of the Sportage, this crossover SUV goes for a more curvaceous look.

The current Sportage saw a mid-cycle refresh in 2024 for the 2025 model year, making this a design that’s been in the global market for more than a year already. Yet, as you’d expect from Kia’s Opposited United design language, the Sportage still looks fresh and futuristic in 2026. For its mid-cycle facelift, the boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights have been swapped in favor of vertical Star Map LED daytime running lights.

The vertical LED headlights are matched with a more upright grille, while new, geometric alloy wheel designs ranging from 17 to 19 inches have also been fitted. In the case of the range-topping X-Line version we experienced, it came with futuristic black 19-inch wheels. Changes to the rear are even more minor, as these are limited to new LED taillights and a slightly reworked rear bumper.

Stepping inside the 2027 Kia Sportage Hybrid, you will be greeted by a horizontal dash design that has been the design characteristic of the brand’s current crop of stylish models. The horizontal dash is matched with generous soft-touch plastics and matte textures, which is a refreshing sight to see as automakers now scale back from their love toward gloss black plastics. And as with many Kia models, the new Sportage Hybrid’s interior prioritizes the use of animal-free leather, which still feels plush yet highly durable and plush to the touch.

Dominating the interior layout is the pair of 12.3-inch screens running the brand’s connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) operating system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are fitted as standard, along with the smart toggles, which is the Sportage’s configurable climate and multimedia switches just below the main touchscreen. There’s also a very punchy Krell sound system, plus a panoramic sunroof, along with heated and cooled front seats. Do take note, however, that these are features for the Korean market. The specs for the Philippines are not yet final.

Towards the back, the 2027 Kia Sportage Hybrid offers a generous amount of space. With a 2,630 mm wheelbase, the Sportage is one of the most generously sized crossovers out there, as reflected by the sheer amount of legroom you get. Those at the back are treated to heated seats, their own air conditioning vents, and two USB-C fast charging ports. There’s also a powered tailgate, along with the full Kia DriveWise suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, which includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Lane Following Assist, Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, and, at least for the Korean market, Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2).

Think of HDA 2 as Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot. It works with the country’s infrastructure in order for the Sportage to autonomously adjust its speed based on the country’s varying speed limits and even have knowledge of where exactly the next speed camera is. It can even perform automated lane changes. HDA 2, however, isn’t a full self-driving feature, but rather, an enhanced SAE Level 2 autonomous system.

But if you don’t want a robot to be the one driving the Sportage Hybrid, you’ll be delighted that its 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder and parallel hybrid system performs really well. It’s the same system found in hybrid versions of the Tucson, Sorento, and Santa Fe, which means that, as we’ve experienced this system on these three models, it performs similarly in the Sportage.

With 235 horsepower and 367 Nm of torque, the parallel hybrid system delivers smooth and instantaneous power. The electric motor is integrated into the six-speed automatic, which makes the Sportage’s hybrid system feel direct and have linear power delivery. No engine droning to be found here, as there are actual gear changes from the six-speed auto box. Fuel economy-wise, we averaged around 14 to 17 km/l on this fast-paced drive, which are figures that are slightly thirstier than the Tucson Hybrid we tested. However, the Sportage Hybrid we drove has a mechanical all-wheel drive (AWD) system, which is also a factor.

As for the driving experience itself, the Sportage Hybrid focuses on refinement and stability. Ride quality is great, as I’ve come to expect from the Sportage since it shares a lot of mechanical traits with the Tucson. The chassis is solid, too, quelling vibrations before it reaches you, though cars like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V still somewhat offer a more solid feel when it comes to shakes underneath the structure. The Sportage also has plenty of sound deadening, aided by its acoustic glass on the windshield and front side windows. Handling, once again, prioritizes comfort and stability as opposed to outright sportiness, though the Sportage still has a reasonable level of handling dynamism. This is a family crossover, after all, and for its intents and purposes, the Sportage Hybrid offers comfort and refinement that’s matched with distinct design inside and out.

The 2027 Kia Sportage Hybrid is all well and good, but the segment it’s competing in is very fierce. Not only does it have to battle the well-priced Toyota RAV4, but it also has to contend with numerous Chinese crossover competitors, too. There’s no doubt that the Sportage Hybrid easily stands out from its design and linear hybrid system, but ultimately, its success will come down to how well-priced this vehicle is when it arrives in the Philippines this year. Nevertheless, the return of a familiar nameplate will surely make the compact crossover SUV segment a lot more fierce than it already is.
