Mitsubishi announced a completely new nameplate for the local market, and those in search of a practical family hauler naturally got curious. Positioned to shake up the tightly contested 3-row crossover segment, the all-new 2026 Mitsubishi Destinator hits the road with a fresh identity that looks to move families past the usual Xpander or Montero Sport route.
What we have here is the mid-spec GLS variant, priced right at ₱1,599,000, and it might just be the absolute sweet spot of the entire lineup.
Exterior Design
I just love the way the Destinator looks. Following the brand’s modern “Gravitas & Dynamism” design concept, we see on the Triton and Xforce, the Destinator is one that catches your attention immediately with its massive road presence. Up front, it features the signature Dynamic Shield fascia with an intricate acrylic 3D grille and those very trendy, sharp T-shaped LED headlamps that make it look powerful and unapologetically futuristic.
Interestingly, while it is shorter than a traditional ladder-frame PPVs, the geometry leaves an impression pulling up in the Destinator. It is surprisingly wide at 1,840 mm. That extra width lends a feeling of presence and muscle behind the wheel on the tight Metro Manila side streets and narrow mall parking slots, though it demands a bit more attention when maneuvering. The machine-cut two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels fit the arches perfectly, but the rear is a tad busy with the ‘Hexaguard Horizon’ tailgate layout that might take a bit of getting used to.
Interior Design
Inside, the 2026 Mitsubishi Destinator GLS has a clean, very modern feel. It doesn’t have the fancy ambient lighting of the top-tier GT with 64 colors and the massive panoramic sunroof, but the cabin layout is super neat and convenient. The driver’s view is dominated by an 8-inch multi-information digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch smartphone-linked infotainment display that handles wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto seamlessly.
The seats are wrapped in a comfortable fabric, and the overall ergonomics make long drives easy. Space-wise, Mitsubishi did an incredible job utilizing the 2,815 mm wheelbase. The second row is deeply accommodating, and while the third row isn’t exactly built for large adults on long road trips across provinces, it comfortably handles children or smaller passengers without making them feel entirely cramped. When you need extra grocery space, the third row folds down beautifully flat, transforming the trunk into an absolute cavern.
But there are some questionable caveats in the feature list for a car at this price point. Firstly, you won’t get the top-of-the-range Yamaha Premium 8-speaker system but will have to settle for a basic 4-speaker setup that sounds clear but lacks a little in the punch department. The noise, vibration, and harshness insulation could be better. You do get a noticeable amount of road and tire noise creeping into the cabin on the expressway. Secondly, the GLS still has a manual liftgate, which is a bit of a negative compared to the GT version and a few rivals that now offer power-operated tailgates as standard.
Drivetrain And Performance
Mitsubishi finally answered everyone’s prayers under the hood by dropping the old naturally aspirated setups. The Destinator is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 161 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque, paired to a CVT.
Driving it around the metro and on the highway, the turbo setup delivers exactly the power you need for quick overtakes. It provides a solid mid-range punch that ensures the car doesn’t feel like it’s screaming under heavy load when you have passengers on board. It’s a highly intuitive drivetrain that keeps the ride smooth and car-like, completely avoiding the stiff, utilitarian bounce of a traditional pickup-platform SUV.
That said, the suspension setup is a bit of a reality check. The front has MacPherson struts, while the rear has a torsion beam rigid suspension. On our poorly developed city roads and sharp potholes, the rear feels a bit stiff or bouncy when driving solo or with one passenger. But load it up with family and luggage and the suspension settles down nicely, soaking up road imperfections with a soft, stable composure.
One complaint that is valid for long-distance travelers is the size of the fuel tank. The tank is quite small for a turbocharged 7-seater family vehicle at just 45 liters. It’s pretty efficient on the highway, but if you take it on a provincial weekend trip, you might be stopping at gas stations more than you estimated. On the other hand, tight spaces become a breeze to maneuver thanks to the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems that come as part of the GLS safety pack.
Verdict
All in all, the 2026 Mitsubishi Destinator is a well-built, good-looking, and satisfying package. The GLS variant is priced at ₱1.599 million, and it effectively trims off the pricey luxuries of the GT while keeping the core mechanical upgrades, safety features, and everyday tech intact. It makes you feel confident and unique on the road, while providing your family with a satisfying, comfortable experience. If you’re shopping in this price range, the Destinator GLS is absolutely worth every peso.
