Next-Generation BYD Seagull Is Now RWD And With Independent Suspenion

The next-generation BYD Seagull has already debuted in China, just three years after the first-generation model was revealed. The Seagull is completely redesigned from the ground up, with no components carried over from the previous model.

The next-generation BYD Seagull immediately makes its presence felt with its longer proportions. Whereas the previous Seagull was under 3.8 meters (3,780 mm) long, the new model is now 4,205 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall. The bigger dimensions somehow improve its proportions in our opinion, too. Based on these photos from Chinese automotive website Autohome, the next-generation BYD Seagull carries a longer hood, while the short overhangs maintain its dynamic stance.

Key highlights of the new Seagull include new LED headlights, as well as a LiDAR sensor on the roof for its advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). At the back, the full-width LED taillights have been ditched for more conventional separate LED taillight clusters. Topping it all off are an integrated rear spoiler and larger 16-inch wheels as a result of its growth spurt.

Moving inside the next-generation BYD Seagull, you’ll be greeted by an interior with a wide center console that wraps the front occupants, and it now contains a larger touchscreen infotainment system. There’s LED ambient lighting running across the dash, but the digital gauge cluster has been eliminated. Thanks to its larger dimensions, the next-generation BYD Seagull is now a five-seater instead of the previous four-seater layout.

Also made possible by its rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout and elongated proportions is the addition of a front trunk, though its size has not yet been revealed.

What has not yet been revealed is its battery size; what we do know is that its RWD electric motor produces 95 kW, or 129 horsepower. Also helping its ride and handling characteristics is its fully independent suspension, wherein the rear axle now uses a multi-link setup instead of the previous model’s torsion beam.

With the next-generation BYD Seagull already revealed in China, it’s only a matter of time before this model finally hits the Philippine market.
