BMW M is celebrating a milestone as it produces its millionth vehicle today. The milestone vehicle is a BMW M3 Competition sedan painted in BMW Individual Fire Orange III, which was presented by Peter Weber, head of BMW Group Plant Munich, to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, as part of an official ceremony.
The production milestone highlights more than five decades of BMW M, the brand’s high-performance division that has released a plethora of legends and icons over that lifespan. The BMW Group Plant Munich, where the current M3 is produced, is also set to manufacture the upcoming fully-electric BMW M3, which was presented in concept form a couple of months ago.
“BMW M combines road and racetrack capabilities with everyday practicality,” says Franciscus van Meel. “The one-millionth BMW M vehicle shows that these values are still very much appreciated by our customers, 40 years after the market launch of the first BMW M3. This motivates us to continuously develop our BMW M high-performance vehicle portfolio based on BMW M Neue Klasse technology, including fully-electric models, in line with our core brand promise.”
The fully-electric BMW M3 will be the second Neue Klasse model after the recently unveiled i3 to be manufactured at the highly flexible plant. From 2027 onwards, the company has announced that the BMW Group Plant Munich will only produce fully electric vehicles.
As for the first-ever electric BMW M3, details are still kept under wraps, just like this camouflaged pre-production model that they’ve previewed. Multiple reports have said that it will produce near or in excess of 1,000 horsepower from four electric motors, though the power output is still unconfirmed. As for its design, it’s unsurprisingly close to the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse that was previewed a couple of months ago, albeit toned down with less aggressive fenders and slightly narrower air intakes. The rear end also looks more conventional, but there’s only so much we can get from their camouflaged pre-production prototype.
